Midi devices with same name

Hi,
I just got me two new CME UF70 Keyboards that I connect tom my Vista64 machine with USB.
Using MidiOX I see that both Keyboards are sending MIDI data and some (standalone) software synths (e.g. Minimoog) respond to MIDI data send from each of the keyboards.
If I load the Minimoog within Cantabile it only responds MIDI data sent from one of the two keyboard.

Perhaps the problem is that both midi devices have exactly the same name (CME UF)?

How can I get around this??

Which version of Cantabile are you using?

Did you check the Midi devices setup in Cantabile?

Are there two entries with the same name? And double for in/out?? You need to activate both then... however it's a bit odd to see which one is which... :D

Usually programmatically ports can be identified not only by name but by number too, so two ports with the same name should be no big deal - except it is somewhat confusing... however I'm sorry I can't reproduce your scenario and give more help... :(

Hi pmohn,

Thanks for reporting this issue. I've made a fix for this where Cantabile simply appends (2), (3) to each subsequent midi device with the same name.

It's a "special" build still labeled as 2036 but should resolve this issue. I'd be grateful if you could give it a quick test and let me know if it fixes the problem so I can roll it into the next official build.

Thanks again for your help.

Hi Brad, good to see that you're still around... :D

I'm about to connect more HW stuff right now too and was amazed by the practical abbreviations you show in the racks for midi in's and out's...

I know it's a bit odd with the midi ports when multiple ports have the same names as when one disconnects and reconnects one of these you might not know any longer if it's #1 or #2... and logical port numbering reported by the system can change...

Let me know how you resolve this programmatically as I've stumbeled across this issue in my .net code base too... :-o

Hi Brad!

YES! The "special" build did fix my problems - now everything runs smoothly.

Thanks for solving this so quickly!! I hope you'll release the next build soon!

Hi Brad,
maybe you can consider assigning alternative names for midi ports as I've found some names from drivers are not very informative like "workstation"... and despite the clever abbreviation of port names it might sometiomes be similar in port selection menus and racks...

@pmohn: great, thanks for letting me know. New build will probably be this week sometime.

@TiUser: I'm reluctant to do anything too fancy with MIDI port renaming/remapping right now as I've got a number of improvements in the area planned for next version.
