I'm interested in learning more about this.
Not pleased about the dongle though - waiting with baited breath for more info on that particular point.
Anytime (which is rare recently anyways) I make music nowadays it's all on the laptop, more fun being able to take my laptop to a mates house with my apps, sounds & ideas on & then I can utilise my environment & preferred method/workflow in tandem with whatever said mate is using.
Don't like the idea of having to carry any kind of bloody dongle with me.
Time will tell.

Has there already been any indication that this app will work (or even make sense) without having Reason ?
I can't imagine that for example a noob which wants to enter music recording splashing out 250$ plus however much Reason costs nowadays just to get simple audio recording (and probably even simpler editing) ?

Where exactly are you getting $499 from? Most retailers sell it for $399, however the price for both is still high.

I'm gonna quote what Blank said in this post @ the Props Forum (hope he doesn't mind):diverdee wrote:I'm interested in learning more about this.

Seems like it won't be that much of a pain for us Reason users.Props have thought this through very carefully and come up with a dongle solution that isn't annoying or intrusive at all. It's nothing like you're used to from Cubase or other audio apps with traditional dongle protection. More deets on Monday.

Propellerhead's shop. In my local shop it goes for 3850 NOK (Norway), thats $600.djanthonyw wrote:Where exactly are you getting $499 from? Most retailers sell it for $399, however the price for both is still high.
Edit: Thats Reason alone

Yes, it has a bunch of FX and will work as a standalone product. It just doesn't have Reason's instruments. If it depended on Reason it obviously wouldn't be released as a standalone product.John Vulich wrote:My questions is, does it at least have reverb, delay and modulation FX built in, or will it require the use and installation of Reason for these features. If it needs Reason, then I really don't see the point in it being a separate app. It should have been Reason 5.
Their basic philosophy is that they hate products that try to be everything to everyone. Dedicated tools for each job, no Swiss army knives. So they don't want to sell guitar bands a recording suite where they have to pay for a bunch of synths, samplers and drum machines they'll never use, and they don't want to sell a multitrack audio recorder to electronic musicians who never sang a note or played a guitar chord in their lives. And given that Reason + Record together apparently will cost no more than any other suite that has the functionalities of both programs, it's not like they're ripping anyone off. They're standalone products, but merge into one if you use them together.
I agree in principle, and I'm kind of tired of paying loads of money for excess functionality that I never use. I've never used PowerPoint in my life but I have to buy the damn thing if I want Outlook, Excel and Word. I never use Fireworks, Illustrator or Soundbooth but I have to buy them in order to get Photoshop, Flash and Dreamweaver in one bundle. As for Cubase 5, I use maybe 25% of it... it has so much superfluous stuff I never even looked at, like the Score Editor. But I use 98% of Reason (the other 2% being the ReBirth Input Machine).

And for propellerheads it's basically the other way round - you'll need all five apps to do one thing

Cool, a dongle that won't inconveniently stick out of 1 of the ONLY 2 USB ports on my Macbook Pro! I Can't wait to see it!DRS wrote:I'm gonna quote what Blank said...Seems like it won't be that much of a pain for us Reason users.Props have thought this through very carefully and come up with a dongle solution that isn't annoying or intrusive at all. Cool, then that answers my main question. Thanks!blank/diod wrote:Yes, it has a bunch of FX and will work as a standalone product. It just doesn't have Reason's instruments. Makes perfect sense, now that I know that it will include the necessary FX. And yes, the price point is very much in line with equivalent apps such as Live. Actually cheaper if you take the audio content into consideration.blank/diod wrote:Their basic philosophy is that they hate products that try to be everything to everyone. Thanks for the clarification.

Well it's the most painless dongle-related protection I've seen yet. I won't go into details on how it works until the embargo is lifted tomorrow, I'll only comment on what's already been leaked, but I will say that they never liked dongles and always opted for other solutions (CD/DVD check + serial). So before they went ahead with this they wrote down a list of everything they disliked about dongles and strived to eliminate each one of these issues from their own scheme.DRS wrote:Seems like it won't be that much of a pain for us Reason users.
Some will still have gripes with it for political reasons, of course, but from a practical standpoint it will be difficult to fault it.

I just hope it's short and doesn't stick out very much...

So if you want instrument support of any type in Record, there's Reason, and ... ? Does it link to other apps via Rewire (slave/master) ? Anyone able to tell ?

Woah, that thing almost looks smaller than Logitech's Nano Receiver...John Vulich wrote:I just hope it's short and doesn't stick out very much...

I incidentally had to fish one of those out of a vacuum cleaner last week.
It's a good format for plug-and-forget, I'm just not sure if it would be a good idea for a software dongle that gets moved around. I never remove the Logitech nano receiver from my laptop, but I move the Cubase dongle back and forth between three different machines. If the Cubase dongle was that tiny I'd probably be on my sixth one by now...
