I know that Soundtoys has a TDM/AU version of a virtual echoplex. Does anybody know of a good native VST of an echoplex? I don't just mean a delay or echo plugin, I am looking for the specific modeling of an ECHOPLEX tape delay/echo system.

I have the ROLAND SPACE ECHO for UAD2 and it is spot on but it doesn't sound like the old Echoplex.

So, if someone knows of a SPOT ON version of an ECHOPLEX, please share and thanks in advance.

FYI, Sound Toys Echoboy is also available as a VST.

Oh, thanks Scott... gotta go check that out.

Echofarm for protools got both Maestro delays. It's only TDM, but the good news is that Line 6 that released the plug also got all the tape delays included in their old native vst plug (don't remember the name) It came with a usb interface that you needed to have installed (acted like a dongle), but you can pick one up for next to nothing. My mate's got it and it's the same as echofarm except that you get all the amps/mod pedals as well and it's VST.

Until then I think that the freeware Ferox can get pretty close results.

Wayoutware Kickaxxe claims to have an Echoplex

Yeah except the delay on Kikaxxe sounds nothing like an echoplex and it's bolted on the synthesizer itself so I'm not sure if you can use it as an effect. The Soundtoys echoboy is a great plugin and has some presets named 'Echoplex' but they are just an approximation made tweaking the different controls on the plug-in (you can get pretty deep) and I don't think they're that close since it isn't dedicated to modeling echoplex. What you'd need is a dedicated emulation but I don't think there is one...

Its not an Ecoplex but the free GSi Watkat is great

Not to change the topic but like to say... the roland space-echo is digitally emulated in the effects section of my roland SP-808. It's a great device. I never knew until 2 weeks ago the original space echo unit didn't do that flange phasing which my SP-808 does. It has a few controls for it.
I read that the original only did that when the mechanical parts wore and created a slow wobble in the drive.
The mix of direct sound and 1 or 2 copies of tape regenerated sound with the wobble created the phase flange. heh!
No wonder the space echo vst doesn't have a control for that!

Back to echoplex...I have an original.Needs a tape.(can be ordered I know)
The thing I would want mostly from a vst emulation would be a control to "slide" the playback head up and back for the delay time, as you do with the original.
Thing is, I once tried to find a vst delay that allowed you to vary the delay time in "real time" without digital clicks. I was directed to a vst which could do this.
That was a few yrs ago, but is this still an issue...varying a continuous delay control without digital clicks?

EDIT: I want to add, varying the tape drive motor speed would accomplish similar flange phasing as would the playback head on the echoplex varying up and back just slightly like a sine LFO in a vst. There is a vst that does that BTW,if you get my drift? (wow and flutter - freeware)

The analogic delay (interruptor.ch) does a good approximation of an echoplex - being that it sounds a lot like the podfarm emulation I use. :?

Thanks lots cactuseskimo !
Can't wait to try'em. (Also bionic delay)

Thanks guys for the input and ideas. I downloaded the demo of Soundtoys (including Echoboy) and I didn't know that they released the VST version.

I put ECHOBOY on a track I am working on that has an ARP PRO SOLOIST synth line that I needed the ECHOPLEX. I had the UAD2 Roland Space Echo and it sounded ok.

The ECHOBOY made the track come alive and it sits in the mix perfectly.

Thanks... now to find a good deal on the VST Soundtoy Native Bundle. I saw it in a many places for $395 but that's just a bit steep for this... I really could use a 25% off deal (off the 395).

Let me know if you know of anywhere I might get this type of deal. In the meantime, I have it for the next 15 days and it really sounds authentic for the echoplex.

Thanks,
Jim

This is when KVR is a wonderful resource. Thanks for the link.

Well...

It's not an emulation of any specific piece of gear, but check out Augustus Loop. So awesome. For the Gibson Digital Echoplex, look at Mobius (http://www.zonemobius.com)

Good luck with that. I don't think they do deals. I've had an eye on it ever since they went native, but no luck. I can't for the life of me justify $399 for that suite of plug ins. I ended up with Uhbik instead.

Personally I think your nuts... asking for a specific emulation vst of the echoplex, which is really an old piece of design junk, and has no real artistic or esthetic sound value over freeware delays with similar features.
Hell, any long delay-line type delay vst will get you there.(with the right few features)
..and say you would pay $300 just to get it included with a bundle is a little odd..I think. What am I missing here?
Augustic loop for example, like zerocrossing mentioned, is maybe the best long delay-line out there.
Maybe it's the regeneration tape saturation you like...no prob...it's avalible...freeware.

Unless I missed it, did you say WHY you were after an echoplex "specific" emulation? I am sure curious.
The ECHOBOY made the track come alive and it sits in the mix perfectly.
That's a bunch of crap. if you just asked why the echoboy sounds like it does, maybe post an audio sample of your demo, ppl here could tell you how to get it with freeware or a MUCH less expensive device.
