It's not "one company", it's pretty much everyone. Adobe, Microsoft, Apple, doesn't really matter. Functionality is kept separate for many reasons (to keep it focused, to avoid bloat etc etc). If it was about making more money they wouldn't sell the products separately for a total price no higher than what a single app with all the functionality would cost, they would merge the products and force everyone to buy the whole package rather than let them choose. That way you get more money out of each user.

Microsoft could do the same; scrap all product editions and force everyone to buy Vista/Win7 Ultimate at the highest price with tons of business-type features like BitLocker, which of course is completely useless for someone who just wants to set up a simple media PC for their TV. And Steinberg should pack Nuendo, Cubase and Wavelab into a single app that needs 2 GB of RAM just to load. Fantastic idea.

Also, let's ban VST plugins since they don't have full DAW functionality. All products must have everything. Mixing and matching is a sin.

One question I have (... @ blank/diod ...?) -

With Record + Reason, will it be possible to use the ReGroove mixer within Record?
Sure, ReGroove is present in Record as well, there's a 'G' button on the far right of the transport panel. Owning Reason isn't a requirement.

Ok, so now the mystery's out. My thoughts right now are:

- all seems to be very unprecise (mixer controls), no value read-outs, the same which always made reason look like a toy to me
- dongle/internet-check/replacement-guarantee - what's the difference to having a dongle + good insurance ?
- I expected it to be more light weight (so rewiring this into another host seems kinda stupid overkill just to get VST support and better mixing control)
- for users of traditional, top-of-the-line hosts it won't offer anything but I think it's a courageous move to include the reason stuff there, looks like an innovation, especially for reason users, so I can imagine that some of them will certainly drool over this thing

Now that is really awesome

If you want to use 24/96 then you pay the penalty of larger file sizes.
that's for one stereo, or 2 mono tracks though.

Therefore 400MB is 4 minutes of 20 mono tracks. Still a reasonable size, so long as you don't hold on to alternative takes too often.

Also, you may want 24-bit (if supported) for a nice compromise on headroom/filesize, so add about 30% extra.

Whilst you're normally sensible, this is a bit of a stretch. Whilst VST hosting would be nice, all that's really required is record to be a rewire host.

It wouldn't add any 'bloat' but would add a lot of flexibility.

Mac version is 825.6MB and INTEL ONLY. No PPC support this time around.

It's an interesting policy.

Since it's a stand-alone product all of Reason's synths, samplers and effects are coded into it. Though you need to have a copy of reason installed to access them.

If you're a Reason user this is, in effect, Reason 5 - Reason with recording and an updated sequencer/mixer. It seems like a good value upgrade to me.

Propellerheads may have more trouble selling Reason to Record users in the future. Reason might look to those buyers like an expensive dongle to make the generators and effects work with a bit of content (samples and patches) thrown in.

Now with improved MIDI jitter!

Disappointing that there are no editing tools. No reverse/normalize/stretch/pitch...nothing :(
I liked the new mixer, multiple racks etc. But just record and thats it (ok, comp) isn't going to get you far.
And midi out ? Didn't even have to be a device, just a track with some settings.
It looks good though.

It looks good..
maybe an a2 print-out -on glossy paper of course- and on the wall it goes?
My other host is Bruce Forsyth

You MUST be kidding? Surely these basic tools will be added. The final is due out in September so there is plenty of time.

Cheers!

It has no pitch correction tool and can't run as a rewire master, meaning that you can't use Melodyne Uno or such with it. So, to correct vocal pitch, you gotta export recorded vocals to other DAWs with a pitch correction function, right? It's a shame, the workflow seems perfect except for this point.

Quoting Tage from PH: "The audio editing is very bare bones - it's totally not the focus for this program. Audio editing is limited to handling audio clips with fades etc.". You can manually cut it with the razor and thats about it.
