dougsyo wrote:Tough call, to be honest.

I have ST2, SS2, Philharmonik, Samplemoog, all of the Sonic Capsules, the six major expansion tanks, and assorted other ST1/ST2 format products. The only thing I'm really lacking is Sampletron, and I already have other instruments that make it unnecessary.

ST doesn't compete with K2/K3 at this point, but as Squids noted, it doesn't have to. FWIW, I have K2, K3 and IP as well as several sample-based synths.
This could have been MY post, except that I DO have SampleTron. I think Squids is correct about the speed/ease of use thing. ST2's format really has this down. There is a cost to this, of course (i.e. sample size), but for much of what we use it for, ST fits the bill.

Since I have so much of the existing ST library, I have to say that I still can't have enough grooves. However, I'm not a big fan of the ReTank format because of the 1 groove per bank layout. I much prefer the way grooves are handled in the original ST2 library, and the Groove Capsule add on (and also the IP Drum Masters series) -- i.e. a bunch of grooves spread across the keyboard. They are quickly accessed, and can easily be layered this way right in Sampletank.

The other sounds that I really look forward to (even when I audition patches in the current libraries) are the really creative moving pads. I love these things. And even though synths like Absynth are probably the best way to get these, I really like what the S/R patchmasters have come up with in the past. Some really cool sounds. Sonik Synth 2 in particular has some really creative evolving pads.

My first choice would be for horns/winds, especially horns. I liked the few samples that were included in the Rare & Vintage Group Buy and would like to see more ensemble textures in various configurations and articulations.

Second, I'd like to see a cinema-style Pak of some sort with sound fx and avant-garde/experimental stuff in it...or perhaps you could have 3 sound sets with different approaches and then sell them as a bundle like you do with Capsules.

Finally, I'd be interested in more of the same (rare and vintage instruments).

Even though you don't want Sampletank to be the focus of this thread, I think as it grows, so do the available options for you guys to create more new and exciting patches. Even though I'm sure you don't want to look back too much, I think creating more combis that make use of all of SR's previous Sampletank content might be valuable. As others have said, I really like being able to roll my own, but getting professional sound designers' take is still beneficial to me. An example of this would be taking bass patches from the Bass Capsule, Sonic Synth 2, and SampleMoog, and creating a nice-sized bank of combis.

The good:
Pianos, strings, (i have miroslav, ss2,st2), etc.,

The bad:
any ethnic instruments like sitar, tanpura, shenai, harmmonium, etc.,

Also i'm suprised to find that NONE (miro,ss2,st2) have a good rich brass section sound like those found in the triton and motif. Squids please help me out here!

Post

We're working on more brass stuff and should have packs for download soon with this and other sounds you guys are requesting. Keep it coming!

I wouldn't mind a respectful tribute to Richard Wright in a pack of sounds for ST. I know you have a bunch of Hammond, plus others he used, and already have some Floyd-like samples. His piano sound on Great Gig in the Sky would be a fitting tribute since he's playing the great gig in the sky. A little late, but he's timeless.

I voted for 'Choirs and Vocal Pads'. It would be nice to have something new and fresh and not available anywhere else.

Post

Oh, on the vocals thing would it be easy to convert the vocal refill people are talking about in that other thread to ST format? Sounds good to me, I'd be interested for sure.

I agree with one of the other posters that you can never have enough analog synth samples. I found that even though Sonik Synth 2 (I use its sounds in Sampletank), for example, may have sawtooth waves sampled from different synths, they all have subtle differences. I've gotten some great sounds by layering the 'same' waveform, but from different analog synths, in Sampletank.

I don't think Squids should rest until every vintage synth (or other keyboard) has been sampled. He doesn't really need to sleep...
Did you pick up Sample Arp Solo and Sample OB Xpander? Those were some really good ones and I agree with you both about analog synth samples. Each synth has its own flavor and SampleTank is a good engine for messing around with that.
Yep. They're a lot of fun to mess around with. Now I'm still waiting for a TRUE timestretching plug-in; one that can actually increase the time I have available in my day to make music. I suppose mucking about with relativity is a bit beyond the VST spec, though...

I'd like to see more sounds in the ReTank Expansion as the COUNTRY FOLK RHYTHMS. I got some really good things from it. Even as a guitar player, there was an acoustic strum that gave me an idea to write something a little different than I would normally do. Pedal steel and more of Dobro, banjo, mandolin, fiddle and accordian sounds.

Squids I know you're a prog rock guy, heh-heh, and I love the keyboard sounds and the drum sounds you sample. But how about some more Nashville instruments? I don't do country music but much alternative acoustic music incorporates those sounds in it. I don't always have access to those players.

The ReTank is perfect for this, Just as you have let's say Bonzo Beats, you could do a whole disc alone on Peddle Steel with short riffs 1-4 measures and the same with the other instruments as well. To me, Country Folk Rhythms was really great, but it was also a taste in something that could be expanded upon as well. Just my thoughts.

I voted for choirs.

With all the sound released and the ST-based instruments, the choice of sound begin to be quite versatile.

There is some usability concerns that would need to be solved but this is another story ...

I am not a "prog rock guy" only by any means. I have some of the most eclectic tastes in sounds and music of anyone I know. We do have some very rare Nashville sounds in loop form and we did a product called American Heartland years ago. It would be nice to do something new with country/folk instruments in ST format (besides the ReTank Nashville Grooves and Country Folk Rhythms we already have).

i went for vocals and choirs too. I liked the pink floyd ish vox on the rare instruments expansion you released a year of so ago.

After reading some of the above comments, I'm changing my vote. Brass and horns is, IMHO, under-represented in the IK universe. I think we should get more horns.
