A possibility, but emulation is always a possibility too. For *example* if needed I can always run a PPC plugin in Logic on my Mac Pro by running Logic in Rosetta. It's not ideal, but guess what? I can still run it.koolkeys wrote:Even if you have great no-hassle copy protection, OSX may come out with a new update that breaks compatibility with some software, and having no dev around means no updates. It's just one of many risks that are taken.

Mods +1 on the new thread. Sorry for participating in the hijack.
Anyway... yep. I do what ever the mfg requires that I do to use the software I want to use. If it's too much of an imposition (which it isn't for me generally) I just don't use it.
I don't assume or imply that others are lemmings if they come to a different conclusion.
Do I wish Cubase didn't have a dongle? Sure. If Sony Vegas 11 added a hardware dongle would I stop upgrading? Not if they added features I wanted.

Lemme see. Temp lock, maybe split, maybe not depending on how long it would take.
[edit] Wow, not a chance. It would take maybe half an hour of picking through posts, reading each to see if it was relevant to Record itself or just the copy protection issue, and splitting or not splitting. Some posts are relevant to both. And in just a few minutes it went from 750 to about 770 posts -- way too much. I've got programming work yet undone and can't afford to do this; sorry. Maybe another mod?
[edit edit] Wrong, not half an hour. If a mod takes ten seconds per post it will take 7700 seconds or over two hours to go through the thread as it is now.

Sorry Meffy. Maybe it's best just to slap us on the wrist and everyone can play nice and stay on topic. I'm one of the guiltiest here.
I will behave now!
So, anyone hear back about the beta yet? I signed up last night but I'm assuming they haven't started it yet.
For what is claims to do, it does look cool. Whether or not it's worth buying if you're not a Reason-only user is yet to be determined. It seems like there will be a lot of scrolling. Though it appears that in the mixer you can click on the little thumbnail thing to jump to the part you want. It still seems like they tried to make this the ultimate mixing tool and actually fit a full desk into a screen.

Here are some of the most relevant videos about Record so far (so ppl don't have to browse the whole thread):5bongo5 wrote:The Gerry Basserman videos linked on page 40 or so of this thread are *much* more informative, IMO. Make sure you check those out if at all interested. This guy doesn't do a great job of presenting the product.

No news as of yet. Gerry said in one of those videos that the beta is gonna be limited to just some users on the first month, then they're gonna open to every registered Reason user it seems (on the Props forum i've read that they're gonna open the beta to any user, registered or not, but this is not official yet).

To me, all this looks as "ergonomically unpleasant" as it gets.

The initial testing is being done by those who attended the ProdCons... I'm assuming they will widen that eventually to those who volunteer (and have needed system configs)koolkeys wrote: So, anyone hear back about the beta yet? I signed up last night but I'm assuming they haven't started it yet.

After looking at all of the Prop stuff, I still don't see support for third party plugins. Am I wrong? Did I miss something?
No doubt, this app will be just what some have been hoping for, but as for being a truly independent DAW, ready to compete in the DAW marketplace... I don't know.
I'd buy it myself if I could use EZ or Addictive Drums in it. Without the abilitity to use plugins though, is it really not just a basic audio recorder for Reason and Reason Exclusively?
If that's so, I do have to say that I find it odd that Props. are hyping and promoting this as some independent, stand alone, "other" DAW or something.
If the only virtual instruments available to this thing are those in Reason, then this is not so much an independent DAW than it is just an audio recording plugin for Reason, no?
I could be wrong, but if that's the case then IMHO, Props should have just integrated this concept into Reason 5 or just charged a nominal fee for it as a Reason plugin, as loyal Reason users have been begging for audio recording for years.
If this is closed like I think it is, the stand alone nature of this does seem like an odd business decision, especially at the price being asked.

It's not a huge deal for me. It would be cool to test it and help out. But I will likely be able to live without it if it doesn't start testing right away.Jeremy_NSL wrote:The initial testing is being done by those who attended the ProdCons... This is a repost of an entry in the comments section I made over at analogindustries on the subject, but I'm sure ew has been wondering WTF my response would be:
I've been a Reason user for years and I think I'll come to adore Record much like the Combinator added in 3.0.
Originally I didn't see it (3.0) being a major update. I was never big into demanding compression/EQ and I didn't really see how a unit that was primarily an organizational or performance-oriented module was going to wow me.
But within weeks, I was using more expansive streams of devices and in ways that I wouldn't have thought before. Now I can't imagine going back to the workflow of the pre-3.0 days. Now I'm using modules more of as building-blocks to an end than anything else, and creating sounds that I wouldn't have expected.
Record doesn't immediately appeal to me. No VST support? Shucks - I was hoping to drop Cubase. But the ability to record audio and process it through Reason's FX is something I'm sure I'll come to adore.
Plus, since Record works as Rewire slave, I can still use Cubase for my traditional multi-tracking and VSTi/FX hosting while working with the system of racks-and-tracks that I'm damn fluent in.
I've recorded over 400 answering machines - the Best Of recordings are available for use and can be found here:

Sorry, but that is all bullshit... you are arguing for what type of cage you want to be in.LawrenceF wrote:There are very good reasons why some people prefer to use a dongle over some other forms of copy protection like challenge/response.pdxindy wrote:Lot of people get married...djanthonyw wrote:I'm suprised that there are actually people that stick up for and prefer dongles. I wonder if they also voluntarily walk around with a ball and chain attached to their ankle...
The reasons (very logical reasons) have been voiced many times.
A. Even if my Internet connection is down I can still launch my daw on any system no matter what.
B. I get more installations via dongle than the available challenge response licenses and I don't have to ask anyone to cross a certain limit.
C. If you're a musician with a good relationship with a pro studio (or 4) you can install your products there for 100% compatibility with your home projects. You only need bring your dongle and project files. This also goes for your buddy's home computer where you collab sometime etc, etc.
Many more reasons with the main one being independent free will to decide what we like or don't like. You shouldn't be surprised to find (in this world) large groups of people who disagree on most anything.
One man's ball and chain is another man's emancipation.
If all these people you are talking about were given the choice between the dongle and a simple serial number, the vast majority would choose the serial number...
