Hi folks, sorry haven't had time to review, or vote yet, been busy ... should be back on the case tomorrow ... and maybe we can start to discuss the next comp!

Crystal???

Post

Ok, first of all, just want to repeat what has already been said .... Great and varied set of tracks there ... really cool to hear what folks are up to in a musical sense.

Boiling Oats: Wow this track PUMPS! Nice playful bass, in 6/8 if I'm not mistaken .... takes me back to jumping around on my old spacehopper! Track on the whole is bass heavy though, I would have liked to have heard some of those more toppy sounds pushed a bit.

Dancing Ice: An essentially unstructured, evolving, organic dialogue between resonance and dissonance ... loved it!

Down the Rabbit Hole: Good composition! Dark and tense throughout, evokes a sense of being pursued by something, well, something you dont want to be pursued by! .... and it speeds up as well!! Loved the 'scale/key-bending' in the melody and those squelching sounds!

I only Eat Oatmeal: Good bubbly bass sound, and solid percussion sounds! The repetitive use of these, in combination with that freer, rich sweeping pad not unlike early Public Image .... and thats a good thing!

Not Me: The snappy percussion sounds and the wide open, even frequency spread really stand out here, giving all the sound scope for their richness and character to be heard.... That pad is intense! Really sells Oatmeal! ... could write more, but I need to save it for the next track ... which is ...

Oat11meal: Everything said above applies to this track, but this one to my mind is better in terms of composition, melodic content and arrangement.
Great sounds as well, the glass bells, the 'hang drum', and that creamy arped lead .... beautiful!

Oatscollider: I like abstract experiential stuff ... and would like to hear the '12" version' of this one! Nice use of space/time/depth/width ... I couldn't help slam the headphones on and listen again to get the measure of this strange little 3D world of surprises! I could happily do a bit of collab work starting out with whats here!

Organica: Again, too short! Good work in getting drums to sound so real from a synth! ... particularly the snare! Loved that slurpy lead ... and the way it stamped all over that latin riff!!

Porridge .... is made out of oatmeal!! ... just another mention for that dma dynamics plug! ... like the roughly ground oat, simple, humble, but does the job!

Forced Return: Very atmospheric, love the choral pad sound, and the Kraftwerkesque perc sounds! ...overall, a great balance of sounds, great production, and lovely interplay between melodic parts. Despite the 'forced return, it stands up well as a track with a good degree of integrity ... but keep it on hold Yeager, there are a lot of directions to take this one .... the idea/direction will come all the sooner the less you hurry it!

.. and so! How to vote?? What I thought yesterday is completely different to what I think today, and will undoubtedly be different tomorrow .. but I'm gonna decide before I submit this post.

Funnily enough, the one I always want to hear when I open up the tracks folder is the one I've written least about (Dancing Ice), and what I think is the 'best' track changes daily.

But, taking guidance at my own voting guidelines, I have to give my vote to the track which in my opinion ( despite using most fx ) demonstrates the versatility of Oatmeal, so its gonna be 'Oat11meal' ...!

Thanks again to everyone who has contributed in any way to this comp, and here's hoping you'll put your weight behind the next one .... which will be ..... ? :)

I wrote earlier that I was considering offering a prize for this comp. Well this is what I'm going to do.

For the last comp, I made Haku2 ( and Haku ) available to all who contributed.

I always have a project or two in the making, so each time there is a comp, I am going to add something to a collection of participants prizes. They will not be available for general release either for sale or for free, and whilst I cannot guarantee they will be useful to everyone, or better than what you already have, they will be a little bit different at least.

Haku/Haku2 are now in a different folder, and will be joined by Blackbox1 ( 3 osc cascade with 3x LFO for noisy stuff ) and Reprobate ( accelerated delay based mangler ).

I'll post the links to all participants in due course. Between then and the voting for the next comp, you will be free to download any/all of the vsts in that folder.

The winner of course, in addition, will win rob lee's sylenth soundbank.

hey guys, thanks to all listeners and also to the nice comments you made on my track

Just finished a half assed effort at making the above plugs slightly presentable :hihi:

Hope you enjoy playing around with them .... if you like your sounds fierce and untamable, then I'm sure you will!

Just saw Oddy on the 'random plug of the hour' window .... future comp?

OK, forget it!

there is a thread here somewhere about oddy free. someone (with permission from chris roberson - the dev) has temporarily hosted his plugs. one of the (very) few truly great synthedit plugs imo. signficantly, in reaper at least, it doesn't seem to suffer from the fabled synthedit bug with multiple instances in multi core systems.

i would wholly support an oddy free comp!

Thanks do-androids_dream .... but that link ends up at the same dead end. however, reading onto the next page in that thread, this link appears ...
http://www.mediafire.com/download.php?2yqu2nknm3x

...And you can download Oddy as part of a Blu-Gruv bundle along with 'Prophanity' and 'Mini-Vyn' ... Cool! .. I'll try them out later!

... meanwhile, if anyone has failed to notice, I'm looking for some comments re. the next comp!!!!

... As I recall, we were looking towards Crystal to keep the Mac-Lads sweet, then we touched on Tal elec7ro before that comp was kicked off by serve ( still time to enter that one! ) .... and someone suggested automap.

Because the tal-elec7ro comp is still running, I dont feel as pressured to get the next comp started as I would be otherwise, but some discussion would be good! ..... it also bumps the thread and will maybe gather a few more votes as well as stimulate/maintain interest in the next OSC. :)

off the top of my head... freebies that are both windows and mac (not including TAL elek7ro)

crystal
TAL uno 62
TAL bassline
free alpha (linplug)
da hornet (dash signature)
triple cheese (u-he)

of those my vote would go free alpha, 2nd choice crystal...

OK, got both of those recommended plugs .... I was actually going to delete DaHornet from my PC earlier today cos I think it's shit! ...but decided not to cos I had a feeling it might get a mention re. a onesynthcomp! .... spooky!

Cheers for the input do_androids_dream ( can I call you dad for short?? :D )
.... would be good to know more synths which are cross platform .... there surely must be more! ... !!

While not completely totally free, ZebraCM may be used by more people here than many absolutely free counterparts, and might generate a lot of entries. Crystal comes on the same magazine dvd, so a tricky lawyer might argue which synth is more free. If magazine-ware is a contest taboo, maybe only people with 12 or more copies of ZebraCM could enter? :) (I'm really enjoying the Oatmeal entries at work!)
