i had never noticed that before... that's a little creepy...

i must admit i too think dahornet is ahem, a bit crap as well. after all, it is emulating a not too great sounding synth to start with (all wasp lovers will hate on me now...). i deleted it from my vst folder a long time ago.

zebraCM
Mr alias (!)
cheeze machine (bigtick)

i think that's pretty much it. anyone else know any?

if we were going to use magware then zebraCM would also get my vote.

Post

Yeah Glokraw, we discussed zebraCM some time ago, I may be wrong, but I seem to remember there was a bit of opposition to the idea ... cant remember what the issue was actually, I think it might have been lost in discussion re. the definition of 'free'

Whilst I personally have no probs using magware, my preference is towards free synths that maybe dont have the popularity/status as zebra, and I would like to move towards synths with far less 'bells and whistles' than the ones we have done so far ( Synth1, Oatmeal ) .. so the challenge is all about exploring the possibilities a synth offers despite its apparent limitations .... without wishing to make the process less pleasurable. But thats my TPW.

Hi Dad! :hihi:
There is a Mr Alias comp runnig right now .... it may be, what with a this comp, the Mr Alias, and the tal Elec7ro comp running simultaneously, that Mac users have an outlet, and therefore there is less of an obligation for all comps to be cross platform. As far as I can make out there are a couple of participants from here who are also participating in the tal Elec7ro comp.

Still, as I say, its good to know about synths which are cross platform ... so if anyone has any more ideas .... :)

Incredible work, all! Thanks.
I'm giving my vote to Yeager.
But it was a tough call.

I've always liked this oatmeal (apart from the GUI, but easily sorted) and what you guys have done has been, well, inspirational. I've been listening to all of the tracks on the way to, at, and back from work evey day this week and I still think that they are all great. Anyway, after a lot of listening I've voted and whatever the outcome of the poll IMvHO you've all won. And I'm looking forward to the next competition already. Cheers.

Cheers blatanville and MajorBloodnok ( a fellow Scot eh? ... must be 3 or 4 of us at least on KVR now :) ...) ... for your positive feedback and your votes!

Anyway, just a quick heads up ... about one day to go ... and possibly a few hours more depending on when the KVR timezone 'calls it a day' .... still time for a late title challenge .... it's got rather exciting over the past couple of days :)

A shifty lawyer might point out that to get a 'freebie' like crystal, one might need to purchase a modem, and pay for an internet connection, either of which would approach or exceed the cost of a magazine, especially after dividing the large number of instruments on the dvd into the $18 magazine price. Those who say 'but I already have modem and ISP' could be countered by those saying 'but I already have a stack of CM dvds :hihi:

S3, and Sringz2 from Krakli, and Rez 2.0 and Texture from Ugo are freebies with heavily untapped potential, if you're still looking. An expanded contest idea would be to use any of a devs multiple free synths, as some are very prolific, as well as skilled and generous.
Cheers :)

Aye Glokraw, I know that argument, and you can take it further by suggesting that even if you have the CM disks, the modem, ISP etc, you still have to factor in the cost of your PC/lappie, monitor, speakers, electricity, rent/mortgage/heating etc ... but as I say i dont have a personal issue, so discuss away :) ... whatever we use next will be subject to discussion, and the last bout of discussion had Crystal in pole position.

So really, if there is no further movement in said discussion, I will be announcing a Crystal only comp within the next week ... unless someone else beats me to it :hihi:

Cheers for those suggestions .... I have to say I'm not familiar with either of them, so that interests me all the more.

Hi all!

I'm sorry for not to comment on the tracks. I've been very busy lately till the point of not finishing my own track and don't want to be unfair making a quick and void review.

First of all I want to thank all the people that commented and voted. And to you tattiemannie for all your effort in the contest

I'm a bit surprised for the quantity of the tracks. Since the Oatmeal (mediocre synth Fuzzpilz said :-o ) thread it's among the longest of it's kind at KVR, I hoped there would be much more participants.

I'm not suprised about the quality of the entries. Here there are very skillful people in programming patches and composing music. Thus the level is very high

Logically I liked many songs more than others but I'll be making a CD for myself as a backup of the contest. And it will be played, for sure.

Among them the song that catch me since the first moment it's Down the Rabbit Hole of Circuit 23. I played riffs from it in my mind many times.

Unfortunately I'm like the rabbit, ever arriving too late. When I was to vote the votings are closed. Sorry Circuit 23. Consider having one more vote from me.

Another related question with Oatmeal. If you are not aware of it consider checking the plugin Chariseis from Fuzzpilz also. It could put magic in a track.

And one last thing. I vote also Chrystal for the next comp. It makes a bit of fear programming it at least for me but this way I will be forced. It's a very good sounding and plenty of possibilities synth

All the best

Cheers for the comments Diek .... so the voting has closed! .... and we have a winner!!!

Congratulations to BrainOvulation for the winning track, 'Oat11meal' :tu:

Well done also to Yeager for sneaking up close behind, and big thanks to everyone who submitted tracks and anyone who participated in any way.

Rob_lee will be back with us tomorrow, and no doubt he will arrange to have the prize delivered to BrainOvulation. thanks once again to rob for his generous support :tu:

I will upload my contributors prizes and hopefully have a link sent to all by tomorrow, if not tonight. :)

..... and so to the next comp  .... as I said earlier, unless the discussion takes a run in a different direction, I will be announcing a Crystal comp VERY SOON! .... so get you 2PW in NOW! ... even if you are in support of a Crystal comp, it would still be nice to gather some thoughts re. alternatives/future comp synths.

Since Crystal can use soundfonts as part of its soundscape, will there be any limits,
like free soundfonts only? That might be in keeping with the spirit of the free-synth only provision. Sorry to be such a pest  Not everyone knows that feature of Crystal.

Post

Good point Glockraw, I certainly didnt know that feature ... yeah, it would have to be free soundfonts ..... or even no additional fonts other than what (if any) comes with the free crystal download.

I'll look into it.

Post

OK, thats the link sent out to the participants prize(s) .... I hope you find something there which suitably rewards your efforts.

Next comp will be launched on Monday.

I would be glad to hear from any more Devs interested in matching rob_lee's generosity and offering a prize of some sort as an incentive to take part in this next comp, or future comps :)

thank you tattiemannie for making this nice OSC and for the link, thanks to all listeners and votes...

looking forward the next one :D
