Hey, new to production and playing / writing music in general. Got my mits on the remix stems for the presets track 'Kicking and Screaming' and im just trying to figure out the notes in it.

I THINK ive got it at A, D, F, G sharp, F.... i think theres an A sharp in there too but im only really paying attention to the lowest bass notes, i think the a sharp is an octave higher.

Hopefully im right, the hardest part about anything so far has been finding the right notes.

Dont really want to use any WAV to MIDI stuff to find it, im not even sure itd work with these samples anyway, but if figure the more i use my ears the quicker theyll get the hang of it. But of course, i do want to clarify for sure whether im right or wrong and where im mistaken.

If im not right could someone correct me

Heres the song:

Thank you!

I don't think there is a note of the 12 tone scale thats not being used given the whole song - a good example of chromatic use. A 7 tone scale that might have the most presence could be the F Blues with and an added 7th.

To help clarify, here are 3 scales you can play with for that song:

F, G#, A#, B, C, D#, E ---F Blues with and an added 7th

F, G#, A#, B, C, C#, D# ---F Blues with and an added b6th

F, G#, A, A#, C, C#, D# ---A# melavaru

Thanks for the help, i was only really listening to the lowest notes in the main riff, i'll have a play with those scales and see if i can get any closer.

I know where im heading with the remix so thats why ive been ignoring some of the higher notes, i guess i shouldnt really do that if i want to get a whole understanding of the track.

Thank you again

Haha, same, i didnt know what it was either. Like i say im new, so ive not even got my head round 7ths etc yet... i'm listening to the song again too and im not hearing any C, C sharp or D sharp... im still pretty much hearing A, A sharp, F, G sharp, F then back to A again. I thought i was hearing a D before, but im not now...

Main bassline im looking at kicks in at 30 seconds in the video.

I originally got that scale from Scalopia.com. Melavaru is short for 'I don't want to know' when dealing with long Indian scale names. If there is a better name for it, I'd switch. But its better than saying: A#(or Bb in this case) Harmonic minor (no b6 add #6), unless its being used in that context.

Or Bb Melodic minor (no 6 add #6)
Or Db Major (no Gb add A)
Or Ab Major (no G add A)

It seems to be commonly used, or appears sometimes in the imported midi I've analyzed using Chordware.

The chord progressions that come from that scale are sorta epic sounding, like something ELP used.
