I have set up a studio using Cubase SX3/Virtual instruments and vst samplers but am finding it hard, I have no musical knowledge, just been playing stuff by ear and messing about with chords by ear, but now I have got to the point were I think cutting out learning and playing by ear with no actual studying is not getting me very far...
Can anyone point me in the right direction i.e. What do I do to learn?
Get piano lessons from a proper tutor
Get a certain DVD
Certain Online Tutorials
I'm not into reading on this subject, I need to see it happen to take it in.
I just watched Herbie Hancock on Youtube and was amazed(Jamming over a fairlight beat), this to me is how I'd like to play(dream on...)
I am into Breaks/Hip Hop/Electro Funk/Jazz Funk styles/fusions also if this makes any difference...PS I started out by mixing on decks but then wanted to make my own tracks, this how I came into it...The only thing I'm good at is making beats really, I can come up with stuff, but it's not pro sounding enough, too basic...if it was 1986 I'd get away with it(after listening to some chicago house from that period the other day I thought that).
Learning to play keyboard and learn DVD's/Tutorials etc

I'm with you on that one, brother. Funk & soul & jazz piano is what inspires me most too. I did both some piano lessons(which I'd like to resume...), as well as reading, but I have no idea how well this helps me in regard to those kinds of genres. In theory, if one knows enough music theory, then you're well equipped, despite genre! But that's using the word 'theory' twice in one sentence, and thus suspicious.breakmixer wrote:I just watched Herbie Hancock on Youtube and was amazed(Jamming over a fairlight beat), this to me is how I'd like to play(dream on...)

hmmm, makes me wonder if alot of musicians purely play by ear! Not many answers to this post, bored of a question like this I assume lol!MOK19 wrote:Statement fixed!breakmixer wrote:I'm not into reading on this subject, I need to do it to take it in.
