I'm torn now, since I'm moved over to the Windows side, I do have TONS of freely-available plugins to use. I may have to still show restraint.
On another note, I'll probably have plenty of time to work on this now since I just got laid off today. Woo hoo go economy go!

Ouch, thats shit news about your job Buscemi
... sorry to hear about that.
So, do you normally use a Mac then? tell you what, I dont really see the need for all the Mac vs PC stuff that goes on .... PC's a re so cheap that if you already have a Mac, and prefer a Mac, theres still no reason why you cant have a PC running as well! .... and then you can sit back and read the next Mac vs Pc flamewar in the smug satisfaction that you have both, which is actually better than having only one of them!!

Sorry to hear this, Peter! Would it be too "self-helpy" to suggest that you just look at this as an opportunity??buscemi wrote:...On another note, I'll probably have plenty of time to work on this now since I just got laid off today. Woo hoo go economy go!
Anyway, now back to the original topic....

Ha I didn't mean "side" quite like that. I'm pretty open to whatever works best for me and Cubase on Windows blows away Cubase on Mac to begin with for some reason AND my Mac laptop was getting long in the tooth so will serve as my business computer. On the business "side" (ha), thanks for the sympathy guys - I do own two LLCs but neither are actually making money and I'll build those and look for other work. I had been pushed into part time anyway at this job that finally laid me off so no worries. I was already building up side business and indeed - funny you mention that batgab, as I stated to my supervisor that this probably is an opportunity anyway. He's always telling me to get out of IT and make money with music (though he didn't want to let me go, wasn't his decision).
Enough about me, though, I'm cool as can be here and will get to bug people even more around here. THAT'S what should worry y'all. I love this contest and will still be able to give a prize. I can now actually write out what that prize is, I promise!
On to the challenge, people!!

Yeah, on with the challenge! .... and the most challenging aspect I am finding is CPU load! .... heres a tip... Depending on your DAW of course, make your notes hold long enough to have your envelopes get to zero. I'm not finding notes continue beyond the phrase, but the cpu benefits slightly.
My next task is gonna be working on adding note cuts I think, cos the bottom line is, I can barely use 4 sounds at a time.... I'm taking out hats which coincide with kick and snare, but still struggling in places to squeeze melodies in along with just drums bass and pad!
So, if the note cuts dont work out, I reckon I'm gonna have to render sections to wav and mix down in cubase/reaper.
Anyone else having this prob?
Bring on the OnePingOnly comp is what I say

If the drums are static you could just make a nice kick, sample the kick, same with hats and snare, and use a sampler to make a drumkit...tattiemannie wrote: I can barely use 4 sounds at a time.... Saves CPU and you can still change your beats..
Just a thought ( that's what I'm gonna do ! )

Yeah, I think thats the way Yeager .. after writing the above I had a closer look at what was happening, and found that the kick/hats/snare alone were at times reaching 55%

My whole six instances don't sound so bad now!
I didn't bother rendering off tracks as I didn't think it was really in the "spirit" of the contest.
Don't take that as a proposal - just my humble view
As said, it's no wonder I don't dust Crystal off that often...

Hi mouxbar .... yeah, it has always been an option to sample/render ... I think it's written in the rules of all the comps ... it should be.
The only restriction is based on changing the sound of the synth. For example, if a sample, or a phrase is rendered out, it should not have an effect added as the effect becomes part of the sample and if played and repitched in a sampler, that effect will be very much part of a new sound not entirely created in Crystal. ( this is difficult to explain, sorry, but you know what I'm getting at .... like record a click with a long reverb via a band pass filter, and play back the sample on a keyboard via a sampler and you can play a tune with a sound.
I have a part which has automation on the effect. I think it may be a bit outwith the spirit of the comp to render that part out, unless I render out that part in its entirity and not use any further fx other than dynamics.
So mouxbar, if you feel you would have liked to use sampling, feel free to rework and resubmit your track ... still two weeks to go
..Yeah, and two weeks for me to finish off this participants prize.

you might want to read, download and pass on comments. I am using the free mono version in my track to great effect!! ..... in fact, though I've promised a multi-channel version to all contributors to OSCs, I wonder if it will be a bit too much! .... I may have to restrict what I release as the free stereo version in order to make the prize version worth competing for!!

Hey tattiemannie, I just sent a track to the challenge on your 4shared site and totally screwed the pooch on the way you requested we name stuff. It's called - rats live on no evil star. If you would be so gracious as to delete it and it's text file I will upload them again. Sorry and thanks...
