i've been thinking about getting an ipod touch for a few months, but it's not really something i need so i've been putting it off. but now i see that the iphone 3g (not the new 3g s) starts at just $99, which is quite a price drop. so i was wondering, can you buy the iphone without signing up for phone service and just use it as an ipod touch with all the other goodies (maps, browser, etc.)? if not, can jailbreaking solve this?

Unless you can buy one used, you can't get it out of the store without a contract. The phone contract is what subsidizes the lower price.

Remember that jailbreaking an iPhone is like the Hackintosh Mac Clones:

All they have to do is revise the OS and you're left with a paperweight...

I really like the Variax idea (when they post a working example) and for OSC/multitouch - dont really need a phone so I was looking at the iPod Touch for a bit - but at $99 for the phone its a steal IMHO...

I believe that France has some law enabling them to sell without contract - must check it out more!

thanks for the replies. i checked around online and found that it is possible to use it without the service, but it sounds like such a pain for a non-hacker like me, i'll probably just forget the the whole iphone/ipod route completely.

Why? Isn't an iPod touch basically an iPhone without phone service?

I've been thinking about these things lately too.

I just know if I buy one... next month there will be a better version out and I'll feel ripped off (like many do atm with the new release announced)
