It's always been my belief that, in most cases, the lead singer distracts from the music and forces the musicians to play down to the singer's level, which is generally on a par with the audience's level.

Couldn't agree more.

You guys are funny

Lead singers have an inflated ego to be sure. You HAVE to in order to put yourself out in front. I think the rest of the band just has "I'm jealous of the lead singer disease" ;) It takes courage to be vulnerable in front of people and express yourself. Have you guys ever SANG in front of an audience before? I mean in a lead role and especially by yourself?

People (i.e. the audience) connect more with the human voice than with instruments. This is for OBVIOUS reasons. That fact is why instrumental music does not dominate the market. We can all hide behind our computers and make music from a distance but a singer is right there, exposed for everyone to judge. Believe me, it takes some courage! You probably don't have it or you would sing yourself ;) :D

Not that I don't agree that it takes courage and all that, but does LSD cause folks to make gross generalizations bout people they've never met? ;) I'm sure a bunch of folks here have done all that you describe as courageous and aren't complete pricks. Or whatever deb could be called, she likes pricks too much to be called one - she'd never leave the house if she was a prick :P

Plus, the article is a bit of fun and whether they like it or not every single lead singer is a caricature of some sort and being out front makes you a target.

Not true at all. There are plenty of introspective, or shy, or nervous lead singers. Sometimes people become lead singers because they just feel driven to do it but aren't comfortable with it.

Hell, I've stood up and done it, but don't think I'm egotistical. I've mostly done it because no one else would, but I didn't volunteer off the bat... :D

I think I might be in a similar category...driven but not necessarily WANTING to be out there. But ego takes many forms and most people want to be out there at least once...I mean c'mon! :hihi:

Yes ... I also play all the music myself. How about you?

Does that mean I've got IT? Wow, thanks :P

As per this article, big costumes and props are often a way for the singer to take some of the focus off of him/her or to help get into character so they can feel brave enough to let it rip. Hey, whatever gets it done right? Wasn't it Eddie Van Halen that coined this phrase about DLR? Well...consider the source  :)

Does this mean drummers are the grounded ones?
..what goes around comes around..
