In my studio, Lead Singer Disease (the bad kind of LSD) was always referred to when the singer of a project/band either:
a) wanted their vocals to be louder than anything else in the mix. And then make them louder still.
b) thinks it's not a song unless their vocals are going nonstop from the beginning to the end of the track. (musical breaks are only for sipping your beer)
c) thinks a song isn't really a song without vocals.
d) thinks all of the above.

You guys are living on planet KVR. Find me one instrumental in the top 100 sales of any week in the last decade or two in the real world. Music consumers buy vocals and lyrics. Is that a problem?

What do music consumers know about music? That's like implying that Budweiser is a superior beer just because it outsells all other brands (in the USA). indeed, there hasnt been a hit instrumental in forever.
youll have a hard time finding a trumpet player taking a solo on a pop tune also.
i blame music in the schools. if you teach it in schools it cant be hip, goes without saying.
now that music is being dropped from schoools we might see some comeback.
i agree singers have it rough. karen carpenter didnt have any problem until they forced her out from behind the comfort of her drum set. being in front and having to talk and be all exposed affects you, it has to.
then add to that stage volume etc it gets pretty tough.
i dont sing well, its like riding a wobbly bike with bent wheels tryin to push my voice into pitch. it takes about 3 grand of computer hardware and software to get my voice reasonable and even then i dont have much range.
and nowadays you have american idol showing everyone how to pick out flaws in singing, thats gotta make it more fun too.

And I agree consumers buy lyrics and vocals, what I don't believe is that having vocals makes it a song.

Sadly, he's a really nice guy. He was also the Spice Girls publisher...
