GM VSTi Advice

Hi all,

I'm looking for some sort of VSTi for General Midi. Ideally I'd like it to be multitimbral, must sound good and automatically conform to GM. I'd like to use it as a central synth for laying down rough ideas which I can then spruce up with better VSTi synths.

What are you're recommendations please? It must sound pretty good so I can get a very good idea of the final product.

OmniSynth, I think from SonicReality, should be very good, a new version may be out, or check ebay stores, a guy in florida sells old stock of that brand. Wusikstation includes a nice GM set, and with the current group buy, is part of a great deal. I use the GM vibes and other sounds to fill out/embellish Wusikstation presets that still have an open slot
The free Fluid R3 GM soundfont, is excellent played with the free and beautiful SafFron soundfont player and its multi-fx. Fluid R3 is about a 70 meg download.

OmniSynth looks interesting, pity it's an addon for SampleTank as I don't currently own that

Colossus has a fairly strong GM set. Expensive, though.

The original OmniSynth is a stand-alone product based on a SampleTank engine, so its
multi-timbral, multi-fx, nothing else needed. Not sure if that changed in a new version

M-Audio Key Rig contains a good GM module along with Rhodes, Piano and Hammond keyboards. Is very inexpensive I remember, and the Hammond is really very good.

Omnisynth used to come bundled with Sampletank LE, which IK discontinued, so it's now a sample set for Sampletank 2/2XL.

Omnisoundz 2 is out now. It's substantially bigger - 2GB vs roughly 300MB - and uses SR Infinite Player (a version of Kontakt2 Player) engine.

Key Rig has very good interface, remember, the version that includes a basic 49 key midi keyboard, is often the same price or less, than just the software!

Yeah. It seems they have upgraded the set (includes all the previous content plus more) and are calling it Goliath. I never bothered to upgrade due to the cost.

Hypercanvas sounds pretty much like the original Roland GM sound canvas. It's kind of like the Yamaha NS10 Nearfield Monitors, GM equivalent. The samples are quite tiny by todays standards. Also there is NI Bandstand which is good.

Thank you all for your suggestions. I've got some ideas now. Going to try to listen to some demos of the above although I do remember hearing Colossus some time ago and I was duly impressed.

Hypercanvas configures to GM by itself. Not so Omnishynt or other. At least the version I have.
