I did wonder where you'd got to!mellotronaut wrote:no internet for about two days ... hey Duncan, this app is absolutely cool (and well thought through and through)! Noatikl may be more versatile, but Midi Madness is intuitive and i get useful and inspiring results.
Where's the dev? he should do some promotion, because this tool is a winner!
I've found some useful bass-solutions for three bass-lacking sketches in quite a short time.
cheers

Glad you like it, and that you've got some working results from it - very encouraging to hear.
Jim has been doing some more sound/video work with MM today it seems

I listened to the demos, and watched the video. They are well done, but these technoid patterns don't do the trick for me. I'd like to see or hear a demo with a more melodic material. Really, I feel like doing a one or two bar bass riff is so easy to do with any step sequencer or midi roll that many people could say "pfff, nothing worth the price here".
You can't always get what you waaaant...

To give some variation to the demos available for MIDI Madness, I have made a piece just from undoctored generated clips. Using the 'GentleMinimalist' preset as a base, I made Rekwiem.
The preset is an 8 bar affair, with chords moving every 2 bars, following a i-ii-i-v7 pattern. I set the key to Dm (saddest of all..), so we get Dm-Em-Dm-Am7.
The arrangement was built up just from the parts generated as I went along. Most of the MIDI clips were 1st, 2nd or 3rd 'take', depending on what I liked the sound of, or what worked with the other voices. A couple of tracks (cello and flute) took a few more goes and tweaks to get something more idiomatic (mostly changing the octave range); I'm quite thrilled with the results, even tho this is essentially draft quality.
Here's a rundown of what happened:
epiano - MrRay mk1, opening preset, untweaked; notes - GentleMinimalist unaltered.
Cello - sfz with Papelmedia Cello; notes - Durations altered to favour crotchets (1/4notes) and Minims (1/2notes), with a chance of rest. Slightly more chance of the longer held notes; performance length was quite legato, Ocatve brought down to roughly the correct range, with the tails brought in.
Viola - sfz with Grand Viola; notes - as with cello, but with Octave dragged up the frquency range a little, and the balance of duration shifted more in favour of crotchets.
violin - sfz with VIOLIN_SOLO; notes - same again with octave pushed up a little further still, but with the upper tail slid up to catch the occasional higher note. Notes lengths pick up some quaver action, with performance duration stretched down into the staccato territory a little.
Flute - EVM Little Flute; notes - very similar to violin, small performance tweaks, and some non-chord notes added into the pot for greater melodic possibility, mainly 2nds and 7ths and the occasional 4th as the mood took.
Synth - Synth1 with SquareLead preset, untweaked; notes - almost identical settings to Flute.
I staggered the parts entry, and allowed the trio it's own spot and an epiano/flute duet. It's a very simple arrangement, and I can only take credit for editing and final choices - MIDI Madness wrote 'the music.'
Must confess, I'm quite pleased with it for ~45 minutes playing, and that includes the touch of reverb and EQ on the flute before mixdown. Here and there I would be tempted to 'tidy up' some of the parts, which I might do for including this in a collection I am considering; but for a 'straight out of the desk' setup, it works alright as it is
If Michael Nyman and Chick Corea ever got together to do a requiem, it might sound something like this...

sounds quite good, Rekwiem. Not a bit as stiff as one would think an app generated piece did.

I purchased this today, having a lot of fun with it...But unfortunately it crashes like crazy when repeatedly dragging MIDI from Madness to a track.
Using Cubase Studio 4 (32bit) on Vista 64.

this thing doesn't output in a "thru" mode though does it? just creates clips? so really the only advantage of having it as a plugin is that it can menu/map the vst paramteres (which is a great reason btw)? if it doesn't send midi out, it seems a misnomer to call it midi madness. i'd call it "MIDI Drag and Drop Madness" instead.
for me, i was interested when i thought it was realtime out, meaning notes, etc, as i adjusted midi madness, it would be realtime to the synth, synced to host tempo, etc, but it doesn't seem to be the case. this limits it severely - we cant automate anything in realtime on the generative plugin which makes it so much less useful.
no sale for that reason for me. i mean i can do the CC stuff already with live clip automation, i can do my own random keypresses processed through something like chordworx, or even lives own chorder, and achieve similar results.
add realtime midi out and the ability to automate the MM plugin itself and you've got my money
this thing is cool it's just not as cool as i thought it was going to be. so no discredit or anything to the devs, it's a cool idea and a cool plugin.
i'm going only by the website and the videos ... if i'm wrong and it can do realtime MIDI out and be automated same time, then where do i sign?

That would certainly be limiting to me. If that's implemented that would make it awesome.grymmjack wrote:for me, i was interested when i thought it was realtime out, meaning notes, etc, as i adjusted midi madness, it would be realtime to the synth, synced to host tempo, etc, but it doesn't seem to be the case. this limits it severely - we cant automate anything in realtime on the generative plugin which makes it so much less useful.
