2001?!? I've got socks older than that.

You're using a definition of "old" that I don't recognize. :o

In this case "old" is really accurate because you'll not find any vsti plugins before 1999.

Uggh. I remember those ones coming out around 2005, finally thinking "Ok, these are the last soft synths I'll ever need".. lol.

The PPG Wave plugin was released in 2000; not 2002. And, FM7 was 2002; not 2003.

Albino was 2002? wow, how time flies... :-o

i think Tau was the first 3rd party synth i found, or maybe Trilium (?), but i didnt get a PC till 99/00

The VSTi standard came out in 1999, so, if linplug gak stoar was a VSTi it can't be born before 99.
Neon was included in Cubase VST in the first version supporting VSTi so it's 99 too. The first commercial VSTi was Steinberg LM-4, that came out at the end of 99. The first commercial third party VSTi was NI ProFive, early 2000 (I saw a beta version at the end of 99 but sales started in 2000). Now, I should probably add "the rest is history" but it sounds a little bit lame to me... ;-)

seriously they need to stop making them so we can finally settle for what we got and use it to the limit, no sarcasm
but i guess progress cannot be halted as well as the innate human craving for more and better

good thread tho, how about free VSTs chronology?

I have to dispute the Albino time..in early fall of 2002 I was involved in doing demo's for Linplug's Delta (which later became Albino). Peter rejected my demo's, saying he wanted something more along the style of trance..but that's beside the point.
