OK, here it is! The poll for best sfxr sounds only track.
All the tracks in the comp were created using only samples exported from sfxr ( a single osc 8/16 bit game sound generator ) .. and/or the buggy Vst version of same. confused? ... See thread ... http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... sc&start=0

Please try and listen to all the tracks before casting a vote ... I know it takes a while, but its the fair way to do things ...

So here's how!
Go to the online folder .... http://onesynthcomp.4shared.com/

Here you can listen to individual tracks, and read accompanying notes re. what what was used in their making. You can download individual tracks as you wish.
(actually, you may have to download the txt files if a current intermittent prob persists, in that depending on the browser, the txt files may or may not be previewed ... I feel like apologising, but its not my fault!!)

Alternatively, from the same link/folder, you can also download the zipped folder 'sfxr comp'. This will be a lot quicker than downloading individual tracks, You will then have all the tracks in one place to listen to at your leisure!

...and another option, yes, I will approach our good friend BrainOvulation to set up a streaming page, and thanks in advance to BrO .... hopefully he will help us out again and I can post a link here very soon.

Reviews, however brief, are always welcome, but even if you can only find the time to add a short comment, then please do! ...it keeps the thread alive, and encourages others to listen/vote. I will do a review when I can grab a bit of time to do the job justice.

******Tattiemannies ( stuck record ) guide to voting******

A broad approach I would recommend would be to disregard genre and to some extent, production quality. Its more about how the artist an the chosen synth have produced the range and quality of sounds necessary for the track.
so .... we dont go asking "why no brass?" in a folk tune, anymore than we ask "why no soft pad?" in a punk track....... The idea from the outset is to create a track using only one synth..... and the proof of the pudding is about how that challenge has been met, so it's not about the merits of the synth, nor the merits of the track, it's about how the artist has shown that the limitation of using only one synth, does not necesarily limit their ability to produce a quality track, in a style of their choosing.

So I suppose what we're looking for as a yardstick is the "wow! you did that whole track with one synth and hardly any effects????????" factor ...
.... but thats my take on things .... feel free to apply your own criteria when casting your vote.

** I am having to extend the voting period a little, merely because I am about to enter another mad spell of gigs, and dont want to be absent when the winner is announced, prizes organised etc .... So closing date for votes will be the 4th of August.
But primarily, ....Enjoy the music!----

Hey Wow! one vote in already!! :) .... OK, since we're well and truly under way, how about we intersperse our votes/comments/reviews etc with ideas for the next comp?

My mind's a bit of a blank right now re. past requests, possibly because the sfxr thing was quite a departure to the norm, so .... err ... polish synths, SQ8L, ...err Onepingonly :help: ... Ok, I think I need to do some revision!!:hihi:

Hi! and jeeeeah! i got one Vote 8) Thanks a lot! (never thought about getting one :o)

Heard every Track 2-3 Times, and can't really decide...
but since i have to:

My voting goes for: Tattiemannie-Eurofishin because it has some very cool sounds in it. I absolutely like that harmonika-thing in the beginning (starting 0.10/11). The Track has some... "Good-Feeling" in it, like a nice Summer day.

Second would have gone to Mouxbar!

(Beware of my english, it's nearly german )

Good Look to everyone!

Cheers MA-Simon ... (Cue song... ) ... Ah feeeell good! ( danananananana!) .. Laka nu thadda woodnah! ( danananananana! ) :hihi: .... harmonica? hmmm yes I suppose it does sound like a harmonica ... now that you mention ...

Yeah, I've gone through the tracks ... it's gonna be hard! Some cool stuff there, All of you guys have somewhere stretched beyond what I hoped to expect in terms of either musical space, or richness, or both considering what we were working with.
Its great to listen to it all ... as I have repeatedly said, I dont listen to any of the entries til theyre all in ... and now having done so, I thank you again for your submissions, like this time for what they are ... not just for the act of submitting them!

I have written to Dr Petter, sfxr's developer, and invited him to listen to what we have produced ... I think he will be a happy guy for some time to come! ... well, I would! :hihi: ... OTH, he might be into EMO or Country-trance and hate it :hihi:

I have uploadeed 53 presets for sfxr. If anyone wants to add to this, ( or just go get them ), then here's a link to the folder.

(shit link removed .... read on! )

Note ... I have not tagged these with my name or any sort of ID, cos most were either directly from randomisation, or slightly tweaked from randomised sounds.
If we can put a nice collection together, I will zip the whole file and include it in the sfxr comp archive when the voting is all done and dusted... then I will put pressure on the good DrPetter to link the archive to the sfxr page on his site! How about it? :)

My pleasure, sir! 8)
I really like the first 20 seconds (yes 20 seconds can be enough for a vote :D) for the bell sounds and that glissando thing. Also what comes after is interesting. The whole thing, how the sounds are programmed and put together, represent very well what you are trying to describe. Yes it's very short (it would be a good idea to develop the song further), there is not counterpoint () but after all this is not the aim of the contest. I like how you shaped the sounds, very simple, very clean.

Anyway hasn't been simple to decide. Considered how it was difficult everyone has done a great job, so congratulations to all of you.

.....( ouch, ...OK, that was spontaneous yet flawed thinking ... having to wait 10 seconds to download a less-than-1k file is not gonna get folks jumpin!! ... please upload your presets as a zipped file if you can! .... I will if necessary do it for you, but ... well, I feel such an idiot right now I want to ask admin to subtract 10 votes from both my tracks  )

OK, I'll go replace that lot with one zipped file. :)

Thanks again MA-Simon! :)

OK, here's the link to the 'new improved' sfxr presets folder!

http://www.4shared.com/dir/18085768/255 ... rests.html

Zip your presets file and stick it in there! ....and/or go get whats in there!

Post

... oh, and dont forget, when I'm not around to keep the thread suitably bumped, you gonna have to do it for me!

hint! .... would these tracks have been better done in Live, FLS, cubase, Reaper, and/or PC/mac .. :hihi: :hihi: :hihi:

Gamma-UT's tracks are awesome :tu:
Even more amazing is that he managed to make 2 tracks of such quality for the challange

I vote SQL8, just my 2 cents.

My vote is for Gamma's Happy Cat as I pretty much signalled when he released his first naughty version. Very much my sort of thing but a great sound as well. 8)

Thanks also to Gamma for the further notes on EQ. On balance, just using what I have seems to be perfectly OK for my purposes - so that's great.

I'll mention Shamanix and Simon in dispatches as well for their work in the compo which I enjoyed.

As to the next compo, who knows? I'm prepared to try anything and er, just have :hihi: SQ8L... never used it. As long as it can be programmed OK? Looks a touch digital having a quick look at it. Nope, had another look, now a bit confused...

Anyway, I'll try anything once - there's plenty of stuff to play with out there. I thought Felix was very nice and FAT  as a recent freebie release as an example.

Well done all,
Mouxbar

On second thought, yeah, dump SQL8, and make it Felix instead, that way I don't have to program too many sounds :hihi: Since I've already made ~2.5 banks for it :hihi:

I wouldn't say it was simple to program but my cat was recently spotted knocking a mouse around and getting some sounds out of it.... :hihi:

I'm not too sure that it would do any nice pad type noises though, but boy, fat as my Aunt Nelly (she used to beep walking backwards etc. etc.) :hihi:

Sorry, enough silliness already.

Cheers,
Mouxbar
