Hi Peter,
I have a long standing problem with RMV which the latest beta didn't cure:
After a fresh boot of my DAW (XP, SP2, Tracktion 3) RMV takes about 40 seconds to initialize. If I delete it and start it again it starts normally (something like 2 seconds or less). Even if I quit Tracktion and start again everything works normally. So, it only happens the first time after a (re)start of the OS.
Any idea what could be causing it?
The PC is a q6600 with 4GBs of RAM, the OS is on the 2nd partition of the C drive (no net, antivirus, etc.) and the libraries are on a different physical HD.
Thanx for any help.

Yes, that is no bug, this is normal. RMV is scanning the complete Library and is making the list when you want to load a file, like a wav file or drumloop, into rmv...

Thanx for the reply Frank but do you mean that every time you (or anyone else using RMV) start your PC and insert RMV in a track in your host it takes 40 seconds?Xenox.AFL wrote:Yes, that is no bug, this is normal. And why the next time you do the same (even if you restart your host) it loads almost instantly? Does it save the results of this library scan somewhere so it doesn't have to scan again? If this is the case, why can't it be saved permanently so next time I boot my DAW it's already there (and I don't have to wait 40 seconds again)?
Sorry if I sound like whining for 40 seconds but I really like RMV and I don't use it that much because of those damn 40 seconds. I end up starting RMIV instead most of the times
Thanx in advance for any help.

Oh, it looks like that i missunderstand something, you write after a restart RMV is scanning the complete Library again, okay, this is not normal... RMV is scanning only when you start it the first time.
We should wait till monday when Peter is here again, maybe he can help...

Thanx Frank
To make it clear it happens every time I load RMV for the first time after a (re)boot of the PC. Within the same session it doesn't happen again (even if I quit Tracktion and start it again everything is normal. But if I shut down the PC, start it again and then try to load RMV I have the same 40 secs delay)
I don't know if it's Tracktion specific. I have a Reaper copy installed so I try to see if it happens there too.

I am no PC user but i remember a tool like VSThost where you can start VST, too. Try to start RMV there and see what happened... Maybe this will help Peter to find a bug... If there is some..

thanx guys, I already downloaded VSThost to try it. Is there a way to use it to create a log of what's happening during the loading of a plugin?
By the way it is not Tracktion specific. I just tried to load RMV with Reaper (after a fresh OS restart) and took the same 35-40 seconds. I tried with Tracktion just after that (without restarting the PC) and it loaded instantly.

No clue , unfortunately. RMV saves the required info permanently in a file, upon load it quickly checks if any of the cached info may require an update and loads (!) the respective kits of loops then. If you not extended the library
and not saved changed kits or loops this is a matter of a few seconds, 40 sec looks like its - after a reboot - scanning the library in full, or a large part of it. Is your system clock ok ? ( if in case the CMOS battery is empty and you always start with a wrong, old time, RMV might always think the cached info is outdated).

thanx Peter. I'll check the clock. Can you tell me where exactly this file is stored (and what's its name)? Just to check its existence and properties before and after loading RMVPeter from LinPlug wrote:No clue , unfortunately. I think it is due to the Windows disk cache; after first folder scan, data is retained in the Windows disk cache - the same one that speeds up Windows file searches. When after reboot RMV does its scan, then those data are in the disk cache until it gets full and room is needed by other apps. This would explain why only the first RMV insert after reboot is so slow.

Just loaded RMV after a fresh boot this morning and it took about 5-7 seconds to load in FL Studio. I can test in other hosts as well but I don't have Tracktion.
What kit do you have set to load as default? Perhaps it's a really large kit or the samples are located somewhere that takes time to scan?

I think I have disabled the "Allow Indexing Service to index this disk for fast file searching" option for all my HDs. I'll try enabling it again to see what happens.mabian wrote:I think it is due to the Windows disk cache; after first folder scan, data is retained in the Windows disk cache - the same one that speeds up Windows file searches. thanx to both of you guys
---------things to check------------------
a) system-windows clock
b) indexing service
c) files modified just after RMV loading

system clock is OK
windows report the correct time and date
I tried enabling indexing for the folder with the samples
I also checked a file named samples.cfg
"modified" time is the time you unload RMV for the last time
I also tried to copy it in the same folder with the RMV*.dll's
nada
I think I have to live with these 40 seconds
just in case it gives Peter any idea:
Disk 0 has two partitions. Both have an XP installation. First partition C: is a generic installation with net and everything; second partition is a DAW only XP install and it's the one I'm using for making music. All plugins are in this second partition.
RMV library is in a different HD (Disk 1)
