The 2 arpeggiators should offer some fun and a little bit of headache too :hihi:

Hi Max,

Just had a quick look at this - another new one to me. I'm geting some decent sounds on the go very quickly and very low CPU usage. Do you know of any preset resources so I can have a look through a bit more of peoples other ideas :?: 8)

As a quick OT, thanks for the advice on the Soundblaster Live cards on my very budget system

I've got hold of one for £1.99 off Ebay including postage :!: and am awaiting arrival with screwdriver in hand. More fun to be had anyway.

Now that's what I call cheap...

Felix is lovely - and would be a challenge for an OSC to get a complete track out of it.

I'm kind of the opinion that Tattie likes to make us work a bit harder to get something out of the synths that are picked

Cheers,
Mouxbar

Hi folks, cheers for the info on SQ8L .... I've only tried it in fruity, so didn't know about the preset saving issue. I'm afraid that would rule it out for a comp.... shame, I like it a lot!
Will check out Galileo, and those other synths when I get a bit of time, I'm still between gigs, so it might be Monday before I can check it out .... keep the suggestions and the discussion going though ..... I'm sure there are loads of free synths we can choose from.

Mouxbar, no not really, it's not that I want folk to work hard ..... more that I like an element of challenge .... and that comes more with a synth that has some limitations, or percieved limitations :) .... So the comp involves not only writing a track, but exploring the synth, creatings unique sounds .... personally, win or lose, I always feel that apart from enjoying the process, I have made the featured synth more of a useable tool than just a file in my plugs folder.

Anyway, have to dash again, Well done everyone for keeping the thread active and attracting those votes! :hihi:

Last-minute voting from me (again).

This was a really hard one to call but in the end I opted for MA-Simon's Visit the Planet soundscape. I think this one coaxed that little bit more out of SFXR and had a cohesive framework for using all those sounds (although I think the tweeting birds and 'vinyl scratch' at the end clinched it for me).

But there wasn't a weak track among all of them. I had a real hard time awarding the vote. I started off having a shortlist that I then ripped up again on a second listen. The vote could have gone to Jon Boyd, Tattiemannie, Mouxbar or Shamanix (made in two hours? Blimey).

Post

OK, just going to give the tracks one more listen, then my vote will be cast!

Just a quick word on the 'next synth' options, I like felix, and it will certainly be a challenge! I also like Galileo! ... nice and simple to use, a good range of features, but does have limitations. Both have only 16 presets so it will be necessary to do a lot of tweaking.

The only GTG synth I have tried to date is the Sputnik ... great for atmospheric/evolving sounds, but despite 128 presets, I still think it will be challenging to create required sounds ... percussion for example! Also, it's gonna be a challenge on the ol' CPU! ... but then, we had a nice 'CPU issues holiday' with sfxr ... so we cant complain! :hihi:

So, I would be equally happy if we go for either of these 3 .... but still time to throw any other candidates in :)

Right, it's decision time! Gonna give those tracks a whirl!

Post

OK guys, here's the verdict!

I dont know why, but this time I listened, each and every track sounded like something that could be used in film scene! ... so I'll review each as a film passage!

Bag of Armageddon - Deep in the jungle the tribal drums are sounding out a message of unrest... meanwhile underground, a mutant colony of giant ants ( which unbeknown to the tribe is responsible for the unrest ) is dismantling the church missionary HQ ( which is the percieved cause of the unrest!). The bees are joining the rebellion .... they are waiting for the command, they have begun to sing their song of victory in advance of the conflict!

Jump beep roll - Deep in space in the 1950s, time travel is discovered to be possible when all the spacecraft equipment suddenly turns into Atari games machines! The astronauts have a short time to live, but they discover time becomes irrelevant when you are absorbed in a good game of gravity free ping-pong!

Death is a happy cat - It's the opening scene! The new Dr Who is none other than the Will Smith ... still strutting in his men in black gear! K9 returns at his side, having been on holiday with R2D2 and has picked up a bit of an accent! They find thenselves in a Acid House sex club, not knowing what the next threat to humanity might be ... its gonna be cool, its gonna be exciting, but it's not gonna be today .... or will it?

Forbidden Planets - The phone rings at the plumbers yard. The employees turn out to be members of a Kraftwerk trib!!! .... They have a job to do, and they set to it immediately ... in typically coordinated and rhythmic fashion, and the sound of metal, plastic, rubber, enamel, and ceramic items being lovingly and precisely manipulated into place, ( in black and white ) is a promise of quality in itself!

Made in 2 hours - Unaware that the plumbing in being installed at the venue, the real Kraftwerk are soundchecking! 'Was der Fukke machen diese filtered fahrt sounden?' asks one of the band. 'Ich denke dass der plumbren der fahrten machen' says another. Suddenly aware of each other, they trade insults in degraded formant filtered noise ( but in German as well! )
A little bit of sticking out of the tongue, rasping, and fingering of the nose later, a scuffle breaks out ( involving restraint with rubber tube and bending of metal, and then they think! ) 'Hey! was der fukke fechten wir fur?' is the question. And they agree that without Kraftwerk, there would be no trib, and without a trib, there would be no outlet for shit! So the real kraftwerk slip the trib a couple of hundred euros, and return to their soundcheck!

Visit the Planet - Its Midnight. Something falls heavily on the Earth some miles from a childs bedroom. the child sleeps on inspite of the bells on the dreamcatcher colliding with each other as a result of the impact.... and the further commotion of a similar something flying close overhead and landing heavily. All is not well ... in her dream, the child smiles at the metallic songbirds as they grow in size, and produce feathers. Each one, as it quickly gains the requisite plumage, hastily flaps away to a destination unknown. Still in that dream, the child finds herself alone, and unsettled.

OK, I've listened to them twice .... and so for each, here's a brief musical best point!

Bag of Armaggedon - insectish noises!
Jump Beep Roll - That snappy snare/matchbox/plastic box filled with rice!
Death - its not your kick! .... actually, only joking! ... it is your kick!
Forbidden planets - Rhythm, space, rhythm space, and errr rhythm!
Made in 2 hours - The almost speech-like filtered noise....evil!
Visit the planet - Contrast and flow!

OK, so here it is! It could have been any track. I was drawn to 'Death' and '2 hours' initially, but sorry guys, it aint you. :(
'Armageddon' ... for the anecdote alone, I wanted to vote for it ... and it was the first that reminded me of a film I once saw ( involving giant ants! )
'Jump' ..... just so 'funky' ... and so 'sfxr' I wanted to write a rap over it.
'Planets' ... that mix of darkness, simplicity and comedy is so infectious!
.... but it aint you guys either I'm afraid, I have to give my one little vote to 'Visit the Planet' ... because, well, MA-Simon has not even attempted a decent kick, and yet, within the limitations of sound creation, has put together the track that affected me emotionally more than any other ... really took me places!

Another great collection, and another cool musical journey! Thanks very much to everyone for the tracks! :)

Post

OK, we have a 'neck and neck' situation once again in the comp! ..which is good! ... believe me!! :hihi: ....

... But there's still the rest of today and the whole of tomorrow to go ... so if you haven't made your mind up yet, or you've just strolled in by, there's plenty time, but not a lot :)

Enjoy the music, then do your worst!

Lets get it done, and get the next challenge going! :) Yeaaaah!

You mean presets for Galileo? I think no one ever created presets or banks for it :D Anyway as you can see is very basic, I've done it with the aim to create something very easy to program so it should be easy to create your sounds with a few clicks :D

 Wow great! Glad you found it at this price :D Ok, the next step is to install the KXDrivers, forget Creative drivers, are terrible. As soon as you are ready send me a PM or a mail if you need support (some people have trouble to understand how KX works, feel free to contact me ;)).

P.S. I'm looking in my HD to try to find some patches for Galileo...

Too late! :D I've found the old synthedit project, started to look at it and now I'm fixing some things :hihi: This version has 45 patches ready to be used. Having some spare time I'll release v.1.2 ASAP (with 128 preset slots... but I'm too lazy to program the other 83 patches :)). Also I've lost the old graphic so I'm doing some heavy cut&paste in paintshop :hihi:

Post

You B**turd! :hihi: ... You might as well go fix that Osc mix control while you're at it! ... like make it a complete pan between osc1 and osc2!!!!!!

( that'll keep ye out of mischief for a while! :hihi: )
