SE_Newbie wrote:Just out of curiosity! Why does everyone who tries out Linux seem to flock to Ubuntu? IMHO its slower and more bloated than even Windoze. If you really want a speed advantage you need to try a LiveCD distro like Dyne:Bolic, or Puppy Linux. They pretty much configure themselves during boot, they have decent desktop environments(semi-good-looking but nice and light), and they run pretty fast. In fact, Dyne:Bolic claims to run well on systems with as little as 64MB of RAM and while Puppy requires more RAM (I recommend at least 256MB), it runs entirely in RAM. Also, both have ways of saving your own personal settings to a file that can be saved onto your existing Windows drive with no need to repartition or format anything.
Tell me one reason, why an ubuntu system should be slower than e.g. SUSE?
If you compare fair, it is not.

Of course e.g. Archlinux (which i use) seems faster, but the reason is obvious: the kernel ticks at a higher rate. But you could do that tweak easily with ubuntu too.

Most people use ubuntu, because of ubiquity - the nice and easy to use setuptool.

And by far is it not (more) bloated (than windows) - ever tried 9.04?

Of course if you are using it on a crappy lowend box, it is not the right choice - then DSL (damn small linux) would be much better.

LOL - did you tell the truth?
I try to utilize multi-timbral setups, requiring fewer plugin instances, and fewer tracks
to get a certain sound, than one might reasonably expect. I try to mix so that parts don't conflict, and frequencies don't get clogged with overzealous numbers of instruments. The flexibility and output quality of Reaper is just good enough to be 'serious'.
While I'm not a deep-menu power user, I don't recall thinking, 'gee, if only I could do that!' Basic multi-track recording and editing, and the Reaper juggernaut rolls on.

This does assume one avoids flailing about with all the 'newest, fastest and best', that linux-64bit-or-die commandos tend to march to, and sticking to a solid 32 bit system, and actually recording songs.

So, if I fibbed a little, I will drink some cold beer for punishment! Have you tried the IK Multimedia Fender setup? I had a Twin Reverb in my childhood, (which is ongoing) and I must admit, the IK setups sound much better than I thought they would!
Cheers
:)

Search the Reaper forums, or google it, as there is someone hard at work on just that project. From his posts, the dev working on it, seems determined, and skilled, and
learning new things as needed, rather than giving up! :)

Nope, but if thats another one, competition that doesn't perpetually reinvent wheels can be a good thing 8) EDIT, there is a link to the other one in one of the posts!

that is a pretty arrogant post by me but if you use linux surely you have to ask yourself is it really worth it

Linux requires certain hardware, and some google research to discover
if what you own now, or plan on purchasing, will work acceptably, or at all. There is a learning curve, and as it applies to being a productive musician in a linux environment,
the info can be easily distilled from threads here, at the Reaper website, and several others around the net. Without supported hardware, without asking detailed questions,
and without doing a few hours homework, anyone might reasonably arrive at your conclusions concerning linux. That doesn't really mean you are, or sound arrogant.
Rather, you just took a wrong turn at a poorly marked crossroads, and ran out of gas. Doesn't mean you'll be stuck there forever.

An envy24 based soundcard, and nvidia graphics card are the easiest and best bets to
have success with out of the box, and PClinuxOS, or Mepis are better linux distro choices to begin with, booting them as live media, and if your hardware is detected/configured ok, following basic guides to install, and then set up a wineasio/jackd audio
environment.

Cheers

Clearly it's not worth anything *to you*. So there's no question, to ask oneself or anyone else.

I make a substantial part of my living developing for linux, so I have a professional interest in the system and personal connections in the developer community, in the open source community and out.

Posts like yours make me wonder if it's reasonable for you to be unhappy that linux exists and that people use it. Nobody is forcing you to even acknowledge its existence but you have a pretty strong opinion against it nonetheless.

Why do you suppose that is? Are you saying that linux users shouldn't be welcome on KVR?

If you compare fair, it is not.
"IMHO" should have tipped you off -- he thinks speed comparisons between operating systems is somehow a subjective matter of opinion. It is not.

One could make a comparison between default kernel configurations, or between the default desktop environment, or something along those lines. But those things are configurable to a degree that transcends any given "distro".

There are people who understand the utility of a unix-like operating system, and there are people who only want a computer to be an appliance. The latter group is generally not well-served by a system like linux, and to be honest, Windows is not taking the best approach either -- pressing a general-purpose computing device that is being pressed into service for an application for which it is only *barely* appropriate, and only then with quite a bit of development.

Inasmuch as it is a contest, Windows "wins" because there is demand in a consumer market and a professional market that drives significant amounts of development. Audio production in the linux world is a completely different idiom, driven mainly by volunteerism and self-determination.

When you meet someone who makes his own beer, do you scoff, point out how difficult and expensive that is to do, and explain that there are retail stores that sell ready-made beer? Or do you have a drink with your beer-making friend?
