I could not get the demo to work in Live 8.0.4 : I have Catanya in a track and my synth in another track with midiFrom Catanya-postFx but Catanya just pass through the midi with no arpeggio :-(

It works however in XT2 and I must say it is quite promising :-D

I agree that to really do it justice, a rough manual or help file would be useful.

I like the idea of this product, but I could give a rat's ass about 'gating' effects. The sequences in the demo video are okay, but I'd expect to see quite a few more that are musical rather than just rhythmic.

That aside, I'd be happy to buy Catanya if I thought it would evolve in the ways suggested in the thread -- MIDI import/export, families of other sequences...there is something intrinsically worthwhile in being able to take a sequence of chords and unfold them in various ways, looking for melodic ideas.

+1

Looks promising but right now I get many crashes in Live 7 and the gui isn't right when wrapped as an RTAS in PT.

Love the GUI and the look of it.

Could not get it to do anything in FL as an effect or instrument.

Dont know what I'm doing wrong ..

Ok after watching the video CLOSELY I noticed that the notes/chords must be triggering Catanya.
In the video it looks like Catanya is doing the triggering itself not the little keyboard ;)

It works now and I have to say this is impressive!
I like the fact that its instantaneous and I don't have to do much setting up like other similar plugins.
With regards to not being able to record the notes from FL, I successfully got them out with Piz's MIDI monitor.

For owners of XT 1.41, the plugin will also record the MIDI from Catanya from within FL (with sync stop ;)).

Here are some things that can be added or improved:

- I agree with others here, it really does need a manual. Even optional mouse over pop ups would help.
- If there was some way to import/export the parts via MIDI that would be wonderful (I can tell it would be a hard addition though).
- Internal patch switching (automatable) would be perfect for making full arrangments. THIS IS A MUST!
- A mix amount (probability cross over) would be good to add more random variation to patterns.
- Loop Spread on the patterns would make even more variations to toy with (ie Quarter speed, Half Speed, Full Speed, Double speed, Unlocked Speed...)
- Proper parameter names are a must as its impossible to scroll through 602 of them to connect automation links.
- Sustain/Hold would also be useful for the 'Gate Haters' although latch mode is great right now.
- Would be great if the GUI was resizable with a lower right drag handle.

These are just a few things I've noticed.
I think once this thing has a few more features I'm definatly in!

Ok so if I'm correct one can kind of control the "speed" via the style of play (in the browser).
If so this was not fully apparent at 1st glimpse.

Recorded a short synth demo.

Catanya Test.mp3

Switched the loop length and start to give some variation.
Also I added InsertPizHere's MIDI swing after it just to give a little sloppiness.

This thing would kill for a NewWave sound!
Its very intuative and extremely useful.
Sounding pretty dam'd nice so far.

Will keep testing it..

Nice idea, but as stated before it is limited.
My bidule+guru+trackarp+other_midi_fx combo is a bit more powerfull (manual-or-auto-or-random pattern change, different sync options, multi-channel accessing different synths, different arps modes and settings, cc modulation using mods or the step seq,...), though it's not cheaper.

Now if you can put all that in a single plug, I wouldn't say no ;)

Post

As someone mentioned before... Its more a pattern player, then a full featured arpeggiator. The built-in step designer or the Arpache of Cubase5 has more features.

This plug-in needs many improvements to make it usable for musicians. For a free pattern player its ok, but it's not ready to sell it as a commercial product for 45€.

I was really looking forward to this, after a couple of hours playing with it - i think im going to pass though. Simply not enough features (that we know of without any manual)

What else is there on the market that compares with Catanya and has more flexibility?

I found Catanya to be pretty cool. It's not a conventional arp but a pattern player. That's how you have to look at it. The record to MIDI worked flawlessly. Great job on the interface also. Very easy to use and also easy on the eyes. Believe me, I hate dark colored GUIs, but you guys made this one very simple and nice. I really like the library browser. A good idea would be to make full libraries of high quality genre specific patterns for sale. Sure, Catanya could use a couple more features like legato triggering, and finer control of articulations, but overall it's a very nice midi plugin. Keep up the good work 7Aliens. You just might be on to something here. - Orbit-50

First THX to the others here for the Piz Links!!

In FL Studio 8.5 Catanya works fine without problems and no bugs. Thats great for a 1.0 version!

Good functions are:

1. A big pattern display
2. Some nice presets
3. It's very easy to use

what it needs to become a worthwhile tool is:

1. Save to Midi as a midi file (I think it's easier for some hosts instead of a midi dump function)

2. Midi import (IT'S A MUST, because if I only need some playable midi pattern, I can buy midi-collections with many thousand of them much cheaper and don't need an extra plugin for that)

3. Transpose Note-Grid per Step

OR a supplier to buy huge Catanya Preset Collections for a cheap price :D

PLEASE GIVE US SOME INFORMATIONS WHAT YOU ARE PLANING FOR THE FUTURE WITH IT!!

Since Catanya is an arpeggiator and not a step sequencer, how is a midi import supposed to work?
