Apparently as a first build it is tricky-and Ive had another quote nearer $550 for the parts...

Im keen to shoot out vs my plugins-as Im thinking I could use it on my bass and snare drums...if I can get one for around £300.

It depends on what you want. It can be build for 150 € if you use inexpensive components. It's not exactly easy, but I build working racks full of gear without any electronics background. All you need is time, quite a lot at the beginning.

However - I also found out about the Sebatron Nitrous which could prob be picked up for around $600 so I might consider that...
