I bought one of these JH3S, and I like it a lot! So, for anyone reading that still wants one (they're discontinued) . . there is one left at Zzounds.com -- that they've just posted. They gave me $10 off when I called them to purchase mine.

I actually use a MIDI guitar to play my guitar parts (no, I don't do METAL) and play was a plain guitar sample (usually LES PAUL direct). After I finish creating the track, I then go into the "sound" mode of creating the right AMP/CABINET/FX sound for the guitar part. The beauty of this approach is that if I don't like a LES PAUL, I can replace it was a STRAT sample, etc.
I do the same thing. Ultimately, I would still prefer to get back to live recording, but my preamp's been busted for a while now, and I'm out of a job so this has worked very well for me. Plus I still have a lot to learn about guitar.

I can't wait till I can try out some of these tips. They sound very useful. Thank you to everybody who's posted on this thread

On the idea of duplicating a track so there are say, 3 copies; each with its own 'effects chain;' I like to go in and add a couple of milliseconds to one of the 3, and subtract a few milliseconds from one of the others. Then, the 3 tracks are 'spread' over 5-10 milliseconds. It can help 'thicken' the overall sound.

I don't have a lot of gear; just a guitar and a computer. The best free VST ampsim I've found so far is the JCM-900 from the simulanalog VST pack (haven't tried the Fender sim yet). The JCM-900 VST looks like 'nothing,' but if you tweak those sliders you can find some really 'nice' tones; even if they don't sound exactly like a real guitar amp; the sound can be 'quite good' nonetheless.

I also like the 'redshift pickup replacer' from ACME bar gig.

You can also get some crazy sounds with the 'compact distortion' (but any dynamics are virtually non-existant).

Thanks for the thread; a lot of good stuff on here.

the guy who made that, went on to be the guy behind the coding of overloud's TH1
