Do chords slow down dance music(perception wise)?

I have a friend who never puts chords in his music, when I asked why, he says it gives the feeling of slowing down, I don't agree! We make(or I try to lol) Nu Skool Breaks, what's your opinion?

he is dead wrong.
they can bring an atmosphere far quicker and with a more define way than well, a track without.
well, does he means chords as in "one chord 45 minutes long as a pad"?
in that case, I understand, but what are the typical breakbeat stabs, then?

My thoughts entirely, I'll carry on using chords and won't let him sway my judgement...Chopper wrote:he is dead wrong.

That means I need to get a life! lol, I'm currently unemployed due to the sodding credit crunch so been studying alot of music production and joined kvr and it's been invaluable what I've learnt on here, but I will calm down on posting soon as I've got most of the info I needed, so far!Chopper wrote:well, you used to be KVRist, now you are KVRian... look on your left under your nickname (the KVR grades... means you posted more than 500 times)breakmixer wrote:Chopper wrote:Exactly... hey! one more post and you should be KVRian! I rarely voice an entire chord, but i have a chord structure mapped out (it gives my music a sense of direction). The notes i use at any point in the song will hint at the chord that i have in my 'map' but i never hit 4, 5, or 6 notes simultaneously: to explicitly announce what chord i'm using.
Then again, my music sounds bloody awful.

Why don't you get vocalists in the studio, make accapellas and then auction them on Ebay or set up a site(and give the singer a cut), we had a post on this how we cannot get vocals, seems like a good buisness model if you ask me, but upload low quality vox with sound effects in the background so the cannot get ripped during auditioning, even a buy it now, then give exclusive rights to the purchaser to use it! Might see you through the bad times....And we get legal 1 off vocals, I'm sure this is a good idea...Chopper wrote:well, the credit crunch is even getting to me... I think you're being silly, I was talking percieved tempo by a listener or are you being serious?robojam wrote:I think on average chords slow down dance music by 8%. However, they tend to speed jazz up by 4% on average.

my sense is that chords in the never ending need for resolution can provide some forward momentum to music
but it could be dance music is already so fast and propelled by rhythm elements, that forward momentum isn't as much of a factor
still tension and resolution is what it's all about
