Import as raw audio every kind of file (be careful! You can blow your speakers)

I routed a midi drum clip to sfz with an acoustic drum kit ("Livekit"). The same midi clip was also routed to Adonis (VST by BSerrano).
The drum audio output was panned full right, and the synth output panned full left, then both routed to TAL-Vocoder. With this panned input, the drums are the modulator, and the synth is the carrier.
In the linked .mp3, the first bit is just the dry drums. The second bit of audio in the clip is the dry synth. The third part is the vocoder output. Finally, to fill things in a bit, I mixed the vocoder output and the dry synth and dry drums.

I've tried that in the past, by accident! Got some interesting results. I routed an Alesis SR-16 to a hardware synth accidentally and pressed play; it was at this point I realised exactly what midi is. At the time I thought - WTF?SWTrex wrote:Route a drum groove midi track to a tonal synth.

Great thread!
Record the most silly midi sequence you can - just pressing random notes, with varying lenghts, velocity and rhythm. Do this for a while, 32 bars or so.
Now select a 2 bar loop and move the loop along the midi clip, listening closely.
More often than not, you will come up with a great riff that you would never have played in the first time.
This is especially useful for terrible keyboard players!

If it's a (very, very!) rainy day: take moves from selected chess games, either from your own matches or some world-famous players' competition conquests, and translate these into musical note sequences depending upon the target squares: eg (N) E4, (K) D1 etc.
The tempo/time signature/instruments choice/ genre etc of such a piece is open to interpretation, as only the notes are dictated by the moves of the game.
A chess board would provide notes (lowest) C1 to (highest) B8.
This range could, as far as I know, only be played out on a few natural instruments, eg the pipe organ, but it can of course be exploited by synthesizers or with (note) sampling.
Moves on the H file could be used for wild cards of sharps/flats depending on which row/'octave' the H move took place - eg H6 could become music note A#6.
Castling could come out as a 'flam' (amongst other possibilities) -
eg (K)G1 /(R)F1.
En passant would be treated the same as capturing a piece normally - eg (PxP)E3.
I'd be curious to know (given the restrictions) if anything other than an ambient minimalist piece could really be made from this method.
And, if you're still reading this post(
):
As an alternative to a song composed from chess, how about a synaesthesia song composed from countries' flags with different continents making up different verses/choruses?
(And yep, I know I'm probably stretching this silly thread a bit now!)
Thanks
Doug

Interesting thread! -- here's my contribution:
Count the VSTis that you have in your Host and using a randomizer program pick one at random, then count the number of sounds in that VSTi, randomize it and force yourself to come up with something starting with that sound (tweak it if necessary). If it is just an atonal fx use it anyway, even if only as an intro. If you don't have a program to generate random numbers, use this online site: www.random.org (it's used by academics that need absolutely random numbers for their calculations and experiments). Repeat the process for the next synth. You can also decide how many synths and sounds you are going to use and randomize everything from the beginning all in one go, using the Integer Generator section of the site.
I became addicted
to this method, because of the element of the unexpected involved, and must be now one of the most frequent visitors to the random.org site!!!

Spend 70 minutes with a K5000S while recording...then publish your ambient/new age album.
Stack 10 effects of the same type on a simple sound and randomize the parameters on each instance (make sure to apply a limiter at the end of the chain.)
Import random images into Alchemy/White Noise Additive

No worries Vurt - I think you've explained that clearly enough!
As a expansion on this theme - record all band members naked as well.
Hell, why stop there?

I don't think it would be such a good idea (especially the open doors)... what if a random passer by walked in suddenly and nicked one of your synths or PCs or any other random valuables in your house?... would you run naked and barefoot through the streets after him?vurt wrote:record naked with the curtains/doors open.
