So, as you guys know IK has released an interesting groovebox-type application for the iPhone. Controversy dying down from the hype now... if you've had a chance to play with the free version (or bought the various $5-10 packs) then by now you should know this is a cool gadget! Yes, I know there's all that debate about loops vs. playable instruments, musicians vs. people who mess with loops and think they are a musician etc. Okay, this thread isn't for that though. Believe me, I'm a muso too and want to encourage people to PLAY keyboards and drum controllers as well. At the same time I respect those musicians, dj's, remixers, songwriters, singers, rappers, producers and even just casual hobbyists who want to have fun with a tool such as GrooveMaker. I like it a lot myself and I am pretty open minded.

So, anyway, there are ways to customize some of our construction kit type packs to be able to be compatible with the GrooveMaker patented randomization and remixing system. We expand them with even more loop and remix variations so it can intelligently generate many interactive mix options on the fly.

If you want to talk about GrooveMaker in our Sonic Reality company forum then this thread is for you. Just remember it isn't the IK forum or the general forum. Ideally from the angle of sounds/loops but more if you want. If you have any questions about the app itself then we might be able to get Drew from IK to pop in and answer. If you have sound/c-kit requests feel free to ask!

Oh and yes I believe there WILL be a way for you to eventually bring in your own loops which opens all kinds of doors for using this as a remix tool for either getting ideas or even for live manipulation anywhere you happen to be. The app itself is gaining a lot of popularity and is in the top 100 music apps for iPhone already.

I am also curious what SR sound users think. Not of the marketing (I got it) but of the app itself and the potential (even if we're talking fun as opposed to the same seriousness as you consider your DAW or SampleTank to be). The funny thing about a fun gadget is that they end up being used on REAL soundtracks or the backing track for some hit song... just watch! I heard it was already used on a famous TV show... How EASY it is to compose using that... I am sure composers do the same thing with Karma and other generators like that... yeah it's cheating. I remember when I used to do TV scoring with a guy named Kevin Gilbert we'd get paid by the minute of music even if it was just a bad guy scene with a 1 minute drone!!!!! But that's a whole other thing to discuss.

However GrooveMaker is used (to make tons of money with easy scoring for video games, tv shows, radio or whatever) or to simply make music when you're on a plane or bored in line at the DMV or sitting on the couch with headphones and instead of just listening to music you are interactive with it or maybe at a party where you are the DJ for the night... or you impress your friends with a fun gadget.

Something less electronic. Rock. Funk. ANYTHING that's not electronic, urban, or whatever. Though I wouldn't mind industrial. Do something like your Hard Rock pack for it. GrooveMaker NuMetal even. GrooveMaker Brutal Cookie Monster. I'm not being a pill, either. You guys would be perfect for the rock/vintage/etc stuff.

Okay. Although Groove Maker does lend itself more to the Urban/Electronic genre I think - at least the way it currently works with complete randomization... that means no key changes which is the only tradeoff. But, then again you can have MILLIONS of combinations between infinitely swappable loops within a song of 63 grooves.

That said I think we could find a way to do a hard rock/metal style one at some point.

...and remember you can always export and mangle it in your main DAW anyway :)

Hello all!

I figured that I would pop in (as Squids said). One thing I would like to point out that is a really cool trick I have found is that, at the end of your sequence you want to export, also do a couple sequenced of solo'd loops. This way you can continue to play with the material in your daw once you have chopped it up.

Cheers,
