have a play with tonespace
http://www.mucoder.net/tonespace/
have a flick through the scales and keys and see which ones contain the notes you mention.
then hook up to a synth and play some chord progs in that key and scale.

Checkout this link and start playing with the chords within eb major
If it doesn't sound quite right try cminor which also contains the notes Bb Eb Ab and is the relative key of eb major.
After a short while you should be able to come up with a suitable progression.

the way tonespace works (have you had a look?) is it allows the use to select a key and scale, the highlights the keys used on the keyboard in the gui. you can then use all the squares in the main gui to move around through different chord progs, whislt tonespace pushes out midi to a vi.leighbeynon wrote:oh ok, ive not seen this app before ?

using this you can play the audio and jam trying different chord progs.
its a great tool....and free

oh right this does sound very good,
so it doesnt actually detect the key your in or let you import audio ?
but i could use it while my acappella plays and try to hit different chords within tonespace and attempt to get something that fits with the vocal ?
then export the midi chords, sounds good to me,

Sounds like to me and I could be wrong that you don't won't to invest much time in actually learning the theory side of things and just want something to autodetect everything for you.leighbeynon wrote:oh right this does sound very good,

The hit and hope approach might fast track you to a good result but if you intend to continue making tunes sooner or later you are probably better off learning the nuts and bolts of music. Trust me it will save you many many hours in the long run.
I am not suggesting that tonespace isn't a valid theory tool because it is but try to supplement it with a bit of theory.
or wait a few years more and I am sure someone will bring out an audio tool where you type in the genre, bpm, key signiture, song structure and it'll generate a valid tune on the lines of band in a box but a bit more advanced.

I think tools like tonespace allow the user to "see" music theory, and get a feel for the emotion that different keys and scales present.
Its a great "instant chord prog" tool. hopefully it inspires to learn the notes involved....and how the intervals work....
but its (for me anyways)...gotta be fun

basically ive been having piano lessons for a year now, im still right at the start of learning music and theory,
my teacher only reads sheet music he doesnt understand any computer programmes,
and he has never composed before he can of course embelish music and play what ever chords you like, but he doesnt really play by ear so i can get any help from him,
i just wanted to get an idea of what chords would work with the vocal i have,
and learn along the way, since im already learning scales and chords
i dont want someone else to create a track for me, but with my limited knowledge i need something to give me an idea

All you have is 3 notes - Bb Eb Ab? aint much to go on. This can belong to 5 major scales and several harmonic/melodic minors.leighbeynon wrote: i just wanted to get an idea of what chords would work with the vocal i have,

Other notes? Use the piano and your vocal to answer: B or C? D or Db? E or F? G or Gb?. Establish first a group of notes to use, and then start putting them together. Maybe switch to guitar? The computer's the best for composing, potentially.

try searching for "the circle of fifths", that was how I got started on understanding the basics of chord progressions and such. You will soon discover how chords are linked and which chords you prefer.
