Fantastic! Analogue never sounded so 8-bit :hihi:
... space is the place ...

I would say that the 'Squad sounds so analog that it makes analog sound digital.

It's funny with the oversampling. On some patches it makes no difference and on others I've come up with, oversampling of 1 and 2 are like night and day. Like they're not even the same patch sometimes. I usually hear it where there is high filter res in strobe or cyper(especially in a snappy filter envelope) or in cypher patches with some fm/drive going on.

I guess the way to go is to keep it at 2. Then when you're happy with a patch, put it to 1 and see if there is much difference.

No Demo versions Lovely.

@BFunkU - we're working on it... :?

Something I wanted to point everyone at that not all of you maybe spotted yet... there are demos of a lot of the individual presets (20 or so for each synth) at http://www.fxpansion.com/synthsquad

Click the tabs for the individual synths, you'll then find preset demos in the media player on the right hand side.

These give the synths in a rawer context, and also show off the three degrees of freedom you get with each patch.
This account is dormant, I am no longer employed by FXpansion / ROLI.

Find me on LinkedIn or elsewhere if you need to get in touch.

I can not recommend a demo or we'll find it cracked soon...

I not really understand why a demo is needed...???

For me it was the best buy 2009 so far.

Post

although I bought it without a demo, are you serious about why a demo is needed?

Yes, but others are more sensitive to facts than hype. Reports from people who already bought it are hardly valid evidence for the sceptic, because they could be based on pure rationalisation and justification. I like to demo it too before I decide because the MP3s have not blown me away like I would have expected from the hype.

Jumped in Squad wagon too. There was already statement, that Squad sounds "too analog" and I agree somewhere :). It's pure subjectivity of course, but for me it does sound "more analog" than my Prodigy, Monopoly and Future Retro XS :) It's hard to describe due to fact, that English isn't my native. Or I'll try this way - I know my synths and before I'm touching any knob I know what I'll get. With Squad non-linearity galore :). But at the end of day answer on question "did they nailed THAT analog feel" is yes. They did. All synths are very musical and organic. And RAW as rough sandpaper. Best VA definitely. For me at least.

Which of the FX dudes came up with the load to mod slot idea? The rest of you guys owe him a beer I reckon. :)

@Andrew: Could you please consider creating a properly analogue modelled Ring Modulator at some point? It would seem like large chunks of the code and technology is already in place for this. Anybody who has experience with analogue ring modulation will have a hard time using plugins for that task. The current digital implementations are extremely grainy and nasty compared to the real deal.

Cheers!

I would love an analogue modeled Ring Mod as well. Are their any plans
for something like this ? Is it very computationaly expensive ? Maybe it could be implemented as an update for Cypher or something ?

For reasonable distortion amounts on guitar type frequencies you need a minimum of x8, which is the default setting for render oversampling and will cover 95% of people even with agressive sounds. For those few that want to do full frequency high gain distortion sweeps you will need x32-x64. If on top of that you want to do very extreme fm, not just simple belly tones, you will need at least x256-x1024 depending on the depth of fm and the pitch of the modulator. I have left it up to the user to decide how much time they want to spend on a render, I just set a decent default value.

Andrew Simper
Is there like a "developer mode" or something to get access to these oversampling amounts ? And why were they removed from the final product ?
