All of a sudden, whenever I load up my session of Cantabile using either the ASIO audio driver, there is a constant buzzing sound coming through the speakers. I didn't change anything, this annoying problem just started all of a sudden!

That's difficult when your description of the "buzz" is so vague...

...but to me it sounds like an external HW problem, maybe a 50HZ hum, open ground or similar problem - maybe a damaged cable or a faulty amplifier?

Other than that - are you really sure there are no changes in your audio driver settings to the ones that worked before?

Especially with built in on board cards not all setting may work... I've even noticed different behavior on the same machine just running different Windows versions and drivers...

Have just reported a sound issue on the Cantabile forum - may be different, not sure.

The buzzing\scratching only appears at certain audio driver settings. Using a Novation Nio 2|4, I get the scratching at 222 samples, but it disappears if I increased it, and also if I decreased it. I didn't try every available buffer size, but only at 222 samples did I get the buzzing.

Some software requires audio buffer sample count to be multiples of a certain number, and I wonder if this is the case here.

Thanks

What you've found meets also my experience... not all buffer sizes work.

Often values from powers by 2 work, like 128, 256, 512.

Sometimes intermediate values like 192 (128+64) or 384 (256 + 128) work too.

Odd values do often not work.

I also remember Cantabile reporting that the audio driver reports too unprecise timing information to satisfy certain buffer size needs... I've no big insight here but it looks like a delicate thing...

Also consider variations in sampling frequency... which gets you different latencies with the same buffer size - another factor in timing behavior.
