That's one assessment, but I disagree. There are lots of popular artists I don't care for, but I don't call them shite because of it.thecontrolcentre wrote:Coldplay are shit.

Al Gore fostered legislation that further developed DARPAnet for educational use and then went on to open it up to commercial access.
By the way, if I gave my wife 20 dollars to go to the grocery store to foster further development in meals, can I say that I "took the intiative for creating dinner?"

I honestly do NOT get why Radiohead is so freaking popular. Their music isn't good enough to warrant that kind of success.Reverse Engineer wrote:Radiohead suck, dirty thieving b*stards. never liked them miserable c*nts.

And yet I'll wager you can see why bands and artists you do like are deservedly popular.RyanG wrote:I honestly do NOT get why Radiohead is so freaking popular. I ought to 'confess'
I'm a biiiig radiohead fan. I'm not a fanboy though, so any critcism towards them means absolutely nothing to me.

it hasn't all been done before, music is infinite. The harmonic series itself spirals into infinity,
but, chord progressions in pop music, yeah, you're going to get something which has been done a billion times before unless you're just being wrong for the sake of it.
the radiohead I heard was, pretty good, and quite original compared to Most Acts in popular music. I wasn't thinking 'this is the best band going' like the guy who played it for me, but it has some new seeming approaches in the production and took some risks.
otoh coldplay are shit is a statement I can get behind. in terms of their insincerity and obvious lack of prowess, they are shit.

someday google will be able to search by musical phrase or chord progression and then all this myth about originality will be busted. theres like a thousand tunes based on "heart and soul" and another thousand based on "mustang sally" and another on "my funny valentine" etc etc.
if you were to do something actually original people will be repulsed because they like to listen to what theyre used to listening to, anything new takes awhile to get used to and people dont spend that kind of time on music anymore.
the upside is i play with a few cover bands and its never been so easy.

This is actually much more flagrant to me than the triplet arpeggio thing because La Ritournelle is a somewhat unique chord progression that won't just naturally come to anybody with two fingers, a Fantom, and a half hour to spare. Then again, while Sebastien Tellier is an artist who I personally enjoy quite a bit, a fair number of his chord progressions are very straightforward and I'm sure in quite a few cases, could be found in prior art elsewhere.RyanG wrote:I honestly do NOT get why Radiohead is so freaking popular. Maybe I just need to listen to more of their songs. It's just that they seem so underwhelming to me when I do bother to go listen to it.eduardo_b wrote:And yet I'll wager you can see why bands and artists you do like are deservedly popular.RyanG wrote:I honestly do NOT get why Radiohead is so freaking popular. And there are very few bands and artists that I like "as a whole" (i.e. I like their overall style and most or all of their songs), and the ones I do are somewhat popular. But they're nowhere near Radiohead's success.
Also, please don't misread me. I'm not saying that Radiohead is shit - I suppose it might've seemed that way, because I quoted that post - I just don't get why they in particular are so popular.

I'm not saying people shouldn't dislike the works of some artists. What I am saying is that it's one thing to dislike and quite another to declare them shite. For me, I initially dismissed Coldplay, but the more closely I listened, the more I realized how much thought was in the lyrics, and how the music grew on me over time. It's been my experience, and I have lots of it, that much of my favorite music was not an immediate connection but a slow process of seeing how much deeper the music I didn't like immediately turned out to be. Not always, but enough that I am more open to giving some works more time than others.RyanG wrote:Maybe I just need to listen to more of their songs. The second album by Lily Allen, if you really listen to it, has a lot to say about life and how we live it. She typically gets the Coldplay-type reaction, but the girl's got more going on inside than is immediately obvious...and more than many others who get raves for reasons quite mysterious to me.
