Its a fkn great synth alright! :) ... I'm still playing around with it ... cant stop hitting that 'random all' button! :hihi:

Done a bit of work tonight on participants prizes!

I've got three synths in development

1. A synth similar to Oxyrgan ( developed for last comp ) ... but the feed is a set of sweeping notes ... some strange wobbly arps!
2. A fairly simple unison synth. One osc plus 6 unison oscs ( seperate octave/tun control) with a variable even spread and an LFO to modulate the spread. Nice rich/fat sounds!
3. A sample player which can have a sample freq modded by a mix of Osc and another sample! ... crazy! :hihi:

So what do you fancy folks? I doubt if I'll get all three ready by the close of the comp :)

1 and 3 sound more interesting for me personally :)

It's certainly an OSC candidate as it's a b@stard to program

Pretty original sounds though and the FX only version of the filters is er, interesting...

Pity me with my 2800 Athlon though

And bugger all RAM

Still, I'll give anything a go... once. :hihi:

Here's another one for the compilation CD:

Filename: 4300-05to06-mrblitz000.mp3
Song Name: Variation in the Key of 'E Diminished' by mrblitz000
Host: Tunafish 1.7
VSTi Felix Synth: 3 instances
VST Effects: (on each of the 2 main tracks) BuzMaxi3, (and then on the stereo out) Glaceverb, RoChorus, Classic Mastering Limiter

Note: Just a tad of the 'oh-so-subtle' Anechoic Room Simulator VST effect was added on the 3rd, 'ambient' track. I 'feel' that it really adds, 'a little something' to the overall piece.

;)

On the compilation CD, please use this instead of the actual earlier, contest entry piece. If you would like a .wav, please let me know. Thanks

Great stuff mrblitz000 ... cheers for submitting a track! ... you used anechoic RS?? .... no contest then, cancel the vote, you win!! ... that plug does something to a track more powerful than a subliminal voice repeating the words .... "your ears are in heaven"! :hihi:

Ok, I've got some reviews. One thing is; I didn't know at first that you were making drums in Felix, and - for this reason among others - will have to go back and listen to all of the tracks again before actually ranking them. As with the monthly contest in the Music Cafe, it is very tough here to pick a clear-cut favorite. Here's what I've got so far:

Dr. Quandry, James of Tuscon: Interesting; the playing out on the edges of the stereo mix. They sound like noodling improv, especially near the beginning. This is good.

bangarang, Ah-Dizz: Interesting from the get-go

Pussyfooting, OSCVII Yeager: At first, this one sounds like it modulates by a minor 3rd; then it settles into a distinct key, then does variations on the original modulation. I enjoy the lead which kicks in about 5/8 or 2/3 of the way through.

Feline Groovy, Tattiemannie: The slight oscillation in the one line in particular gives it an ethereal sound. I'm diggin' these progressions! It reminds me of Keith Emerson.

Summer Stalker, Gamma ut: This one is creepy, but in a happy, sunny fashion. I wonder what my impression might have been, had I not known the title to it going in.

Was it a cat I saw, Jon Boyd: This reminds me of the 'extended keyboard solo' part of a '70s rock concert, where the 'keyboard dude' would play around with all sorts of (by now) 'classic kit' for a few minutes.

Felix Goes to China, OSCVII2 Yeager: It sounds chinese! That's a good thing.

A DIFFERENT SKY, Mac of BIOnighT: Good build-up

Cat Food, Mouxbar: This one is cool.

Gently Puss, Mouxbar: It reminds me of drizzly days in Autumn.

Pampered Pussy, Mad Psyance: Heavy! I especially like the part with the 'xylophones.'

Pussyjoos, IIRs: Love the accordian vibe at the start, and the 'riffing' with the 'same' at the end.

Tweakers, Sneakers, and Speakers, Eddie Pedalo: I kept waiting for the snares, toms, and cymbal crashes, and for the rest of the band to join in. It's got a sort of minimalist sense.

--------------

Maybe I didn't say a lot there, but those were the impressions gleaned from a once-through. I will have to go back and re-listen to each entry before attempting to rank them.

From the sounds of it, you've all spent some effort on this. Some of the tracks; in listening to them I was struck by the thought of how much work it could have taken. Good show, everyone!

PS If I've missed anyone's entry from the download site, please let me know.

As I just dissed it, I thought it was only fair to go and have a play with Atlantis again.

Actually, not that hard to program - just a complex 3 Osc synth. It just looks very confusing as it has so many tweaks and displays.

Also cpu usage is fine as long as you ignore the effects area. About 4-6% cpu usage in Fruity on my humble 2800 Athlon. That's fine by me. Turn those effects on and, well, it can go through the roof...

And very interesting sounds. Combined with my own pick of usual effects, a very odd palette indeed. And, of course, hitting the random Osc button gets some very off the wall stuff popping up.

Gets my vote as an OSC candidate anyway - it's lack of decent presets could perhaps get a helping hand from us as well. :D

Cheers,
Mouxbar

Thank you. It sounds as though the title worked - it's meant to be a feline stalker but I didn't want to spell that out. It's why it has a very abrupt ending.

Kriminal ... best of luck with the track :)
mrblitz000 ... thanks for the reviews! :tu:

I've nearly finished the FM sample player ... So far a single sample can be loaded, and may be pitch shifted over +/- 2.5 octaves, and freq modded by another loaded sample, and an oscillator.
The FM feed from the osc and the second sampler can be filtered.
There is a listen facility for the osc and second sample. I will probably decide to replace the listen switch with a vol control allowing the Mod sources to be fed to the output via the adsr and output stage filter.... just for a bit more scope.
I have thought about adding a user envelope, and a user LFO, but not sure.
Any feature requests will be noted, and if not added in time for the end of this comp, then surely will be considered in time for the next one.

Any more comments re our next featured synth?? :)

Post

I vote for a simpler synth, not too many knobs and stuff, a sort of "back to basics and let's see what you can do with it"...

Post

i would vote for something with no filter.
Don't F**K with Mr. Zero.

Post

or maybe just something based around some sort of strange filter like a comb or a formant.
