It is...er, was only a matter of time.

But, there is an important difference, which illustrates Meffy's point, if you're going to steal an idea, steal big. David Guetta took a riff that makes many people think "it's a dance reworking of that Coldplay song", but people understand the reference; Timbaland made the mistake of using a good idea that people thought was his own so that when the similarities were exposed, it made it look as though he was making money off the back of "the little guy".

That's because everybody knows.
He's good at stealing, that's why he's now a "respected" producer. He sampled some arabian stuff, didn't he?

He is bigger than never before, producing like crazy with several known producers, singers.
That's the reason I don't understand why he has to use a know riff...just came here and hire one of you guys musicians to come up with something good and original.

"Too much remixes to do, so little time...hmmmm let me steal this and finish the remix." maybe??

But besides that...I don't think that went well with the vocal.
A lot of people get pissed when a well known producer uses a preset, what about this???

I don't think they do have an "obvious lack" of prowess and the stuff I like by them is very sincere and tender - indeed that's what I like about them. Songs like "Trouble" or "Yellow" are just beautiful with great lyrics and music and so is some of their later stuff though I feel they have got rather samey (but so do a lot of bands).
I like Yellow. I had no idea it was them. The other song is horrid. And, they can't play. They're good actors.

Yes ... this is them in Sergio Leone's latest epic spaghetti western.

If you're going to blame anyone, try Nikolay Diletsky.

He went and created the Circle Of Fifths

Or maybe Pope Gregory I, for getting everyone to chant in certain scales.

And of course, you may want to count how many songs use C, F & G.

I like both the Coldplay and Satriani tracks, but the Kelly Rowland track is awful :D

Not sure exactly why that is making me laugh so hard

thanks though! :D

this guy nails it, why I despise a band such as coldplay:

"they want another :!: radio friendly song"

anyway, I could give a shit if somebody hates say frank zappa, or miles davis, or edgard varese, or you-name-it, which I've chosen over somebody's little popstar actor/poser "sensitive/sincere" strictly from commercial can't play a lick bois. it basically means nothing what somebody says about music I like. not that I'm tough, I just do not care.

I think it's just absolutely bloody brilliant. I wish i would have thought of it first but i didn't. One reason you know who David Guetta is and not who i am.
And he's like rich and get all the chicks and i'm not and i don't.
Genious.

I can see why people get bent out of shape about it. If you have some emotional baggage invested in the earlier tune then the other version can be really annoying because it doesn't do what you expect it to. The chord progression in Guetta's is subtly different, albeit structured the same way (lingers on the same chord for the middle two bars), so it messes with your expectations (plus there's a different melody on top it).

I get it with Tiësto's Adagio because it relentlessly plugs away at one half of Barber's work so that it never properly resolves because the strings are always moving up. It's like the Shephard Tone in trance form. I start to get like Herbert Lom in the Clouseau movies when it comes on ("Resolve, you f**ker, resolve!"). But past that, it's perfectly serviceable trance and, if you don't know Adagio for Strings well, probably not nearly as annoying.

Has anyone done anything with the piano riff from "New Years Day" by U2 ?

I can't think of one or of any U2 for that matter - the opening riff from In the Name of Love has got to be worth a punt. But there might be a reason for that (such as litigation).

I believe there are parts of the Simple Minds back catalogue that haven't been ruthlessly mined for riffs yet. I think Love Song and The American are still up for grabs (but a fair few others from Real to Real, New Gold Dream and Sons and Fascination have turned up in dance form).

And of course there is the riff from Computer Love that Coldplay used - can't remember the name of the song but it bugged me for a almost a day trying to work out where it was from when I heard it on the radio. I felt such an idiot when the memory banks finally dredged it up. Chris Martin, apparently, wrote a begging letter in bad German to ask for permission to use it.

Crap.

Simple Minds it is then.

If I ever make a song that sounds like a coldplay song, I guarantee it's a coincidence. I don't know coldplay from travis.
