I am applying to music school and they asked me to put together a DVD of of me playing some modes on guitar in different styles -- showcasing my melodic phrasing in a variety of modes. I could record some backing tracks myself, but since that isn't what they will be evaluating, I thought maybe I could just download some decent midi or MP3's backing tracks of chord progressions designed for modal practice. Can anybody steer me in the right direction?

Thanks.

Steve Vai has very recently released a boxset of pretty much all his albums without the lead guitar parts mixed in with the idea being that any guitarist can use the tracks to interpret their own solo's and chops over. It is called 'naked' IIRC and i imagine should be a decent platform for your aims/request. Obviously it does highly depend on whether or not you like Steve's material and what not.

Hope that helps a bit mate

Thanks for the suggestions. Are there any tracks of Vai's you can think of that lend themselves easily to particular modes modes?

just try one and there's an 80% chance it's lydian.

I recently opened a website offering educational backing tracks with the guitar player in mind.
These were specifically designed to explore modes.
There are a few free ones on there, you might find what you need!
