Well its that time again!... The poll for best Felix only track.
All the tracks in the comp were created using only 'Felix' ... created by Kriminal.

See thread ... http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... sc&start=0

We have a massive 19 submissions, and if the number of votes matches the quantity and the quality on offer here, then we should have plenty to go around! ... An absolutely excellent collection! ... maybe the best to date!

Please try and listen to all the tracks before casting a vote ... I know it takes a while, but its the fair way to do things ...

So here's how!
Go to the online folder .... http://onesynthcomp.4shared.com/

Here you can listen to individual tracks, and read accompanying notes re. what what was used in their making. You can download individual tracks as you wish.

Alternatively, from the same link/folder, you can also download the zipped folder '00 - Felix tracks.zip'. This will be a lot quicker than downloading individual tracks, You will then have all the tracks in one place to listen to at your leisure!

You can also access a playlist page ... here's the link ...
http://www.4shared.com/play/13038764/ab ... hComp.html

Reviews, however brief, are always welcome, but even if you can only find the time to add a short comment, then please do! ...it keeps the thread alive, and encourages others to listen/vote. I will do a review when I can grab a bit of time to do the job justice.

******Tattiemannies ( stuck record ) guide to voting******

A broad approach I would recommend would be to disregard genre and to some extent, production quality. Its more about how the artist an the chosen synth have produced the range and quality of sounds necessary for the track.
so .... we dont go asking "why no brass?" in a folk tune, anymore than we ask "why no soft pad?" in a punk track....... The idea from the outset is to create a track using only one synth..... and the proof of the pudding is about how that challenge has been met, so it's not about the merits of the synth, nor the merits of the track, it's about how the artist has shown that the limitation of using only one synth, does not necesarily limit their ability to produce a quality track, in a style of their choosing.

So I suppose what we're looking for as a yardstick is the "wow! you did that whole track with one synth and hardly any effects????????" factor ...
.... but thats my take on things .... feel free to apply your own criteria when casting your vote.

** The closing date for votes will be the 9th of September**
....Enjoy the music!--------

I am looking forward to downloading the whole kit and kaboodle and listening to all these cool tracks, then offering up my vote. As many have already said, it's gonna be difficult to pick just one!

Post

Really hard! I'm listening over and over to the tracks. This time it may need some time before deciding...

OK, got that FM sampler thing built ... so thats one new participants prize done. Just doing some last minute tweaks to the presets, it will come ready loaded with a load of sfxr rendered samples, and a mandolin riff :hihi:
I dont think its gonna need detailed instructions, but I'll prepare an overview before I upload it to the prizes folder, and send the link out when I've decided whether or not I can manage to finish a second new prize :)

OK, my valuable vote is cast but this this was my most diffcult choice so far in OSC. And that's a good thing. :D

I'll quickly mention my shortlist:

1) Different Sky from Mac which I loved on release and has a really strong JMJ flavour. First of two shortlisted that had a real late 70's feel to them - I'd have preferred something more contemporary... :hihi:

2) Bangarang by Dziz really hit my glitched up Aphex spot and certainly gave Felix a run into more modern times. Did he keep that Felix feel though? Hmm.

3) Jan Loof Would be Proud by K-Bee has a minimal groove that I really love. I'd like to hear this with proper drums and with more Felix filth. This was a flea I just couldn't scratch :D

4) Pussyfooting by Yeager made it despite his amazingly powerful PC :x This one did keep the Felix spirit alive and reminded me of Tangerine Dream :D

After much replaying, Different Sky finally got the nod from me. Jan Loof was er, a cats whisker away from getting my approval and whilst this is a minimal track, it just has that certain something that makes me smile. Let's hear a non OSC freak out version K-Bee :!:

Well done everyone,
Mouxbar

You know that might just happen one of these days  But not until after this contest is finalized. Then everything allowed and I'll do some MASSIVE drums! :D
As for my own vote, it's a bit too early. I have a lot of listening to do still.

Post

Well, I've listened to the whole lot, start to finish, 4 times now .... still lovin every bloody bit of it, and no nearer to even deciding on a top 10 ... let alone selecting 'the chosen one' ..! :hihi:

The album idea is a bit of a distraction as well .... there are tracks I first listened to more on an individual level which I am hearing in a completely different way now ... with regard to where they would be placed on the album, and how they benefit, or are benefitted by their relationship with the track coming before/after ... I think I'm gonna have to shuffle them around each time I listen to them as a whole collection :)

Got a good chunk of work done on the second new participants prize .... the one which is a bit like Oxyrgan, and a bit different as well :hihi: (.... dont worry, all will become clear in the fullness of time :help: )

Right now it's a toss up between the epic and appropriately titled Mac of Bionight's "A Different Sky", Yeager's psychedelically sinister and superb mixing of "Pussyfooting" and Tattie's complex composing of an even more appropriately titled "Feline Groovy". I have no idea what genres any of these songs fall into, I just know I enjoy them immensely.

Post

Ah f**k it, I went for Tattie's (again). Great track. :band2:

Ok, I voted for Yeager - Pussyfooting.

These was the songs on my playlist in the last days (in no particular order):

MadPsyance - Pampered Pussy (Meow Mix)
IIRs - PussyJoos
Yeager - Felix Goes To China
Yeager - Pussyfooting
A Different Sky - Mac of BIOnighT
Feline Groovy - Tattiemannie

I have to say that I wanted to vote all of the above, but it's not possible, obiouvsly :D Also the other submissions not listed above are really great. This month has been really hard because of a lot of excellent sound programming + great songs. On the sound programming side I've listened to a lot of great drums sounds, above all the work by Tattiemannie

Well in the end I've choosed for Yeager because I really enjoyed both of his tracks and in particular Pussyfooting with his guiro-alike percussion sound and that arped synth which reminds me a lot of good things when I used to play with "Music Line Editor" on Amiga.

Anyway I repeat: congratulations to all of you! Everyone have done a real good job both in sound programming and composing!!

I voted yesterday, but here's who for and why.

First of all I tried to narrow it down to three top tracks, no 1 and 2 clear in my mind from the beginning.

Third place:
Impossible to find. All submission are, for one reason or another, equally interesting and I just couldn't pick one. All I can say is that we're quite a creative bunch, I loved everybody's work.

Second place: very close to first place, Pussifooting by Yeager, the way he recreated the korg pop from felix is amazing, and the song is simply great.

First place: It's very hard to vote without some kind of logic or standard to guide you, so in order to pick the best track I followed these guidlines:

A - any instrument should be used only to create what you have in mind, or feel, or want/need to express. It should never be used just to show off what you can do, nor - even worse - what the instrument itself can do. Music is all that counts, technique/ability is just a tool.

B - an exceptionally good track (or film, or book, or whatever) is the one that gets you so emotionally involved that you forget to wonder how it was done.

Based on the above personal guidelines, I finally voted for Tattiemannie's incredibly original, quirky, dynamic track Feline Groovy.

Again, congratulations to all, a great job by everyone!!

Just a little bump as I prepare to head off for a gig, ....have an early finish, so hopefully I can have a look in when I get home :)

Aaah! ... One load in, one frantik gig and one load out, and a long drive home later, and you'd hardly think I was gone! :)

We need more votes! Do we need to start a flamewar? :hihi:
