My first thought was the 1st one was analog, since it didn't seem to break up like the 2nd one when detuning came in. But then I compared the bass when the two closed their filters & the 2nd one sounds more like analog. Even when the sound was the smallest burst I still heard and felt the low end.

My final answer: 2nd is analog, it's just one not known for its lead sounds.

1 sounds fine, but nothing I feel like I can't do with soft synths like Zebra (indeed I think it is Zebra).
Do it with Zebra then. If you can, I'll buy Zebra.

The osc detune bit is so different between the two - the first has loads of sharp, bristley detail, whereas the second is kind of fuzzy.

I will be really impressed if No1 is a VSTi, but the more I listen the more sure I am that it's the analog.

So, I wonder which analog it is?

"Very desirable", digital envelopes, but analog everything else, sounds like it has a bandpass and/or high pass filter, poss. an arpeggiator too - maybe a Jupiter 8 (not sure about the env's though)?

1st one have much more character, love it. must be analog.

I should clarify. What I should have said is "1 sounds fine, but nothing I feel like can't be done with soft synths like Zebra (indeed I think it is Zebra)."

I didn't mean to imply that I personally am any good at emulating synth sounds. My attempt would be fairly weak, especially compared to the the Zebra sound designers like Kastrup, Haward S. and Urs himself.

I realize I could be totally wrong. I just like 2 better and find it smoother, thus I guess it to be analog because that's the anaolg sound I have in my head. Of course many analogs are very different too. It's totally possible that I'd like a softsynth which sounds analog better than an actual analog one though.

I always wondered: doesnt the device used for recording and the wave processing influence the result, expecially if compared to an all digital device bounced to wav?

That used to be a pretty big issue, but these days most pro-sumor ADCs do a good enough job for that not to be a problem. If a good pro converter was used I'd say it's not something to even consider. (considering you're listening to a digital rendition of both anyway)

its easy to think like that, until you try and AB with the original.

My guess..

1. Analog
2. Digital (at least envelopes)

To add to the analog/digital debate. I used to own a DSI Mopho (modern analog) but sold it since it did not sound analog... if that makes sense...

To me, totally. Haven't tried the Mopho, but the Prophet 08 sounded no better than a VA to me.

1. Totally analog... you can hear it in all the artifacts. Listen for that muted high-pitch whine that's especially apparent toward the end. You can also hear it in the heaviness of the bass and the fuzziness of the extra frequencies that cause slight noise. The rezo drips and warbles too.

The second sample sounds way too clean and controlled. There are no artifacts or surprises.

I'll be very, very surprised if I'm wrong... but I don't think I am. I can totally hear the "magic".

I nearly got a mopho and have thought about getting a prophet 08 but i keep reading things like this. I played a prophet 08 briefly and to me it sounded like the korg legacy cell!

What do you expect? The Korg stuff uses a gongle... where all the dsp processing is done so it's very anal log.

Ok, I listened carefully again and I'm not as convinced as I was before. They both sound good. There are differences, but I don't think I'd surprised if they were both analog or neither was. I'm looking forward to finding out what they are!

I've got the original analog edition so no dongles! It's all itb!

I didn't have long to play with it but i left with that impression. I'm sure it's capable of sounding great. I need to go back and play it some more. :phones:
