Thanks for all the nice comments; it's encouraging to see poeple enjoying these sounds. That would not be possible if 'Tick hadn't created such a wonderful synth first!

My next release is about two weeks out and will take full advantage of the multi destination user sliders to create subtle to wild morphs. Most of these are like no other sounds I've created.

After doing some other freelance programming, I wondered if Rhino was also capable of these same deep soundscapes. Of course, the answer was YES! YES! There will be mp3's posted on the web page at the release featuring the morphs. After that I may do more meat and potatoes or something else useful.

What do you feel the greatest need is?

Daniel,

what about some 'themed' banks, for example,
'The sounds of Pink Floyd'

Also based on the great orchestral sounds in your latest bank, I'd love to hear more in that vein

I'd be hard-put to say what was really needed - maybe another bank of 'meat and potatoes' stuff from classical synths a-la the DX7 stuff mentioned - maybe something based on old Korg or Roland units? Since my current style of music is kind of darkambient/electro-goth (lol genre? What's a genre?) I could find a use for what I'd call "unusual" sounds.. the kind of thing you'd hear in the background of horror movies/sci-fi films.. dark soundscapes, as it were, slowly evolving stuff. I'd bet Rhino could do a killer job at it!

But I'm a preset whore - I can play, I can compose, I can perform but I am absolutely the worlds worst sound designer! Comes from my background as a guitar player.. lol.. nothing but 'presets' on my Strat. :P

daniel, thanks for the suggestions on bank copy and save stuff... that is exactly what I thought I would do... so saved a copy of B and B as Bread and Jam... figuring I would tweak a few thing and save the bank... but when I load up the Bread and Jam bank all I see in the presets for it are 'Default' in every slot...

this is the 'strangeness' of which I speak...

I'm not unfamiliar with patch and bank saving in other vsti's... but in Rhino something just seems to be not working as expected for me....

so, let me dbl check.... you say I should indeed be able to save any custom bank and give it a new name, right? and then to edit the patches in it and save it after each edit, right?

thanks for any further help with this.. :?:

Thanks, ttoz! :) :)

Maxx, I'm not sure what you're doing wrong. Try this: open your folder with Rhino in it. Find the BnB.fxb. Now right-click and copy it. Right-click and Paste it to your desktop. Right-click and Remane it Bread n Jam. Finally left-click and drag it back into the folder you copied it from. If Rhino is open, close it completely and reopen it. Use the Load Bank function to put Bread n Jam in the Internal Bank slot. You'll now have a copy to mangle anyway you see fit.

If you still have problems, e-mail me directly and we'll sort it out.

thanks Daniel I'm not sure what is wrong either..

here is what I just tried from your suggestions:

copied BnB.fxp to desktop, renamed to
Bread and Jam.fxp... put that fxp back in the presets folder.

ok... opened Rhino inside chainer... tried to tweak the settings and save the bank... it 'looks' like it does it but nothing gets saved. Ok, tried to do a rename of a patch on that bank, the rename option is is greyed out so can't be used....

ok hmmm maybe it's chainer's prob I think... so go into Rhino standalone...

same story but even worse... in standalone, saving the copied Bread and Jam.fxp bank results in the entire bank's set of patches becoming 'default'... that is, every patch name becomes 'default' and all the settings are lost as well...

I am on window XP pro... and all other vsti's work normally for me... no other probs really...

I will later try a reinstall of Rhino 1.09 and see if that helps.... but something is clearly amiss!

thanks for you suggestions and help!

@max: did you check that the bank isn't write-protected? I had a similar issue once with a downloaded bank (don't know what the problem was exactly) and this helped.

Max, if you're trying to rename and that option is greyed out, that means you have accessed the bank through the quick-access window. That is only for auditioning sounds and not editing them. You must use the BANK LOAD button on Rhino if you want to load a bank to edit. If this is done correctly the Bank Name box should read "Internal". When you are finished with a sound you must right-click on the name of it on the bank page and select "Write". If you select another sound before doing this the edit will be forgotten. Finally, to save the bank you must use the BANK SAVE button on Rhino. This should solve your problems.

However, if problems persist, check the .fxb to make sure it's not Read Only. To do this right-click on the .fxb and click on "Properties". Under "Attributes" the only checked box should be "Read Only".

These are common problems that plague most users. Please let me know what happens.

right on Daniel the main prob was using the quick bank select... my mistake... but doggone... wouldn't it make sense to be able to actually use that???

I find the existing method of altering banks rather tedious really... I hope Tick might reconsider this whole part of Rhino [which I dearly love and which I think is one of the best synths on the planet!]

I see two things that are a problem with how Rhino deals with the banks and patches...

One, is this current issue... why must it be such a round about method via the 'internal bank' to alter patches and save them... why not just be able to save the bank under a new name and directly alter patches, names, etc in that? I would dearly love a fast and easy way to create my own 'favorite patches' banks from the existing banks such as yours and Tim's... you know, a Fav's Bank that has some of each... or say a 'My Best Pads' banks made of whatever from other banks... a drag and drop banks editor would be lovely!

Secondly, the way Rhino now deals with loading banks at startup... as a vsti, does not really work inside Chainer 1.03 [which I also dearly love]

Most Vsti's inside chainer, can load a bank and a patch and then be saved as part of a Chainer fxp... and when that is reloaded later, the bank and patch come up loaded in the vsti. This does NOT work with Rhino...
So, for Rhino, one must tediously try to remember what bank and what patch was used and manually find and load them....

I think the same is true if Rhino is saved as part of a Cubase SX project, no? There just must be a more elegant way for this great synth to handle these things IMHO.

thanks for your help... write protect on the fxb's is not the prob... I did check that before.... so thanks for pointing me in the good direction...

Glad it's working! I experienced confusion, also, when that feature was added. Once upon a time, every bank was loaded using the "Bank Load" button. This is actually an improvement to provide quick access but use little RAM.

To quickly make a bank from all the banks: If a bank is selected from the window you can right-click and select copy and then select the Internal bank from the same window and paste the sound. This is quick!

max, post your bank improvement suggestion in the ideas thread, so tic can see it. i agree that the current method is a little clumsy; even so, it is better than most other synths.
