:tu:

as (un)important as a bazillion other things in music and, depending on the particular case, some specific difference might have an effect on the music - or not.

just like: the goldberg variations played on a real original baroque harpsichord or clavichord can be excellent, but, as it happens, certain recordings have been made on a quite inappropriate instrument (=modern grand piano) and achieved quite some artistic influence...

May we have links to these works? Or perhaps they are only available on a c.d.? At the iTunes music store? I would be interested in hearing them, but I can't help but notice there are no links in your sig or profile.
Not everyone who likes analog for the sound is a hoarding bedroom anorak who just likes thepretty lights....
I have never asserted otherwise. I myself use a Yamaha CS15 all of the time. But I would never go around telling professional software developers that their products 'aren't there yet' because they don't satisfy my particular preconceptions.

In the same way, I think that digital recording technology is vastly superior to tape in every way. But I would never go to the forums at TapeOp and tell all the tape aficionados that they are missing something because they like their legacy recording medium of choice.

The reason I would not do either of things is that to do so would be to raise my own peculiar preconceptions to the level of a 'standard'. Even though I believe myself to have impeccable taste, I am not such an egomaniac as to assume that what I like is what other people should like.
some of us also (and this is the main reason) appreciate the sound quality and the ease in which they just seem to fit into a production without the hassle. It just works.

I get that.

But you don't stop there. No, you actually have to go and tell Angus from FXpansion that his products 'aren't there yet'. Hell, you compared them to 'I can't believe its not butter'. That is an insult. A major software developer contributes to a thread, and you reply with an insult.

What I am saying is that, rather than hanging out here and insulting the developers whose presence makes this place interesting, why don't you go someplace where people agree with you? Or if you are going to stay, find a more respectful and less vague way of talking about this stuff.

Because the presence of people such as yourself discourages these developers from posting as much as they used to. And to be honest, I am more interested in their insights than yours. That's why I come here and avoid gearslutz. Though, to be frank, this place gets less interesting every day.

Don't take my comment too seriously.

But I do find it funny that you didn't think it mattered so much that you went to the trouble of following the thread and responding to it several times...and keep on responding to it.

So you really are on one side of the argument. Good to know.

Well, after all that's what the developer (Andy) says himself (check the gearslutz thread).

My reason to participate is to put preasure on the developers and to fight the marketing. I was tricked into buying lot's of things earlier on that are far from what I had hoped and the marketing people wanted me to believe. The differences are still huge, and we end up more and more with music that I can't stand to listen to from a sonic perspective.

Softsynths connected to your DAW by Virtual Monster Cables sound much richer and warmer than simply inserted as plug-ins.

+1
I believe every thread should devolve into character attacks and witch-burning. It really helps the discussion.

as soon as you know that vsts have been used, that is. you could found a vst free record label - maybe there is a target group for this. :D

It's a good thing I'm using AU's, they sound more analog.

Your interpretation of what he said says a lot more about your beliefs I'm afriad
Andy Cytomic wrote:Thanks for posting these top examples of why analog synths sound so good! My first synth was a Jupiter 6, it was at a music shop on display next to a few hardware VA synths with the aim of showing how much better the VA's were - boy did that backfire completely. After about a minute playing I asked to buy the Jupiter 6, selfish of me though it was to not allow everyone else to see just how much better the analog synth was. I love all the character of the jupiter 6 and especially the envelope "buzz" which is clearest when the filter is way down low.

In defence of synth squad I think the "mid" tone that people have previously commented was just the drive in the preset being used.

I've put together an example with no post filter drive (by setting the amp low and making up the gain with the level control) . In this example I used cypher with no unison, just the 3 osc, and one svf in lp 24 mode, in serial with another svf in hp 24 mode. At the end I just let the low pass self oscillate tuned to 100% keytrack to play the same melody as before. The example is completely dry.
He most defeintely does not say that analogues are better than synth squad - he says they are better than hardware VA's and then goes onto to demonstrate how synth squad can be set up to have a more analogue sound. It's soooo not what you are saying he said

It all went wrong when Dylan went electric.

I believe that no releases on Harmonia Mundi involve the use of VSTis (they might use a bit of in-the-box processing in the studio, however).

afair a friend of mine has released some old-auvergne (france)/jazz - fusion music on harmonia mundi. he used to use a mid nineties digital roland multi effect on his diatonic accordeon (tastefully applied, didn't do much harm). if they didn't take it away from him during recording. :)

or maybe they didn't think it was a problem, because, fortunately, it wasn't a vst.

I remember on one or more of the Queen albums that they stated "No synths used on this album" Later on they used synths lol

My elder brother used to proudly point to that line on the sleeve. Not a big fan of Jean-Michel Jarre.

His last Queen album purchase was Jazz, oddly enough.
