i might donate my Roland R5 for a comp too.....soon as i have finished sampling it (which may take me a while)

What about a challenge whereas entrants can use any synth from any past challenge of their choice for the christmas comp :D That would be a good one.
But hey it's your competition :D
Anyway the offer of a sealed box copy of Minimonsta challenge stands for Decembers challenge along with my usual donations :)

How much? (yes I know... the postage is way beyond the price of the instrument :bang:).

Ah TX81Z... this is something good enough for a OSC: :band:

Mines in perfect working order..i may keep it if i can get it to integrate into Studio One when released :) It's great for House and Electro max

Ok there's some room left for an OT while we are waiting for the next OSC :hihi:
I've tried S1 and I really like it, the graphic layout is very compact, anything is very fast (drag a synth and you are ready to play). Anyway I have some doubts about external devices... The options for external devices seems limited to midi in/out, channel, and program changes :( I'm missing something? I would like to see more detailed options, maybe some custom modules like the cakewalk studioware and instruments definitions, or I'm missing something? :-?

Max here is the hardware i want to connect:

Emu Orbit 3/Audity 2000/Proteus 2000/XL Turbo/Vintage Pro/Roland MVS 1/Roland MDC 1/Yamaha TX81Z/Quasimidi Rave Max/M-Audio Axiom 49

now iv'e always used a Roland MC50 MKII for all my hardware so im new to getting hardware into a computer.

I also have a Motu 828 MK3/Motu Midi Express but now i need a good sequencer to run all this stuff..i have cakewalk sonr 8pe which im ditching as i don't like it at all now so i was thinking about Studio One or Pro Tools LE.
What do you recommend that will take all this hardware with ease?
Thanks

Rob

Yeah guys, go OT if you want, I'm gonna be off gigging tomorrow, so nothing is really gonna be done til Sunday eve :)

On topic, just a little though, I think I know what I'm gonna do for the xmas comp .... just been playing around with Piz's 'robot juice' and a couple of my fx plugs .... I think the comp is gonna be either that, or maybe even wider, 'use any free Piz synth and any free tattie fx and nothing else!' :hihi:

This is funny Rob :hihi: Really... I don't like Sonar at all too... anyway my suggestion is: Sonar :D Believe it or not I still use Cakewalk Pro Audio9 when I have to work only with hardware stuff. I never found another software like Cakewalk/Sonar that can offer better support for hardware instruments. I know Cubase has a lot of possibilities too, I've tried to explore his features but it's not for me. I have any instrument connected to his own MIDI in/out and from Cakewalk Pro Audio or Sonar I can control anything with easy. One of my favourite features is the Studioware "technology": you can build with easy custom "panels" which you can load from inside Sonar and use them to control your external gear (for example effects units, synth parameters and so on). Cubase have something similar but it works in a more obscure way for me. The sysex view in Cakewalk/Sonar is something that i like too: I've created some custom projects with different banks loaded in the sysex view so I can quickly send patches to the hardware stuff. The possibility to create instruments definitions (usually you can download it from the net) is also something important for me.

I had some chatting with a guy from SAE last week: he said Pro Tools is the best solution for audio recording and mixing but when it comes to MIDI it's a waste of time. BTW, I never tried Pro Tools.

Studio One: I really like it like I said before, but what offers for hardware control is very basic :( If I remember right I've read in the manual or in the site something like "music without MIDI"... there were a few lines where they said that MIDI is an obsolote technology and so on. If studio one had the same MIDI features of Sonar would be my next sequencer for sure.

Sonar: I don't like at all how they changed the graphic layout, anything is more confusing compared with the basic Pro Audio 9. I use it when I need to work with some VSTi+hardware and the dropouts are a nightmare. Anyway I have to stick with it because there's nothing better in my opinion for external gear. To solve the problem with VSTi in Sonar I've put together a second machine with some custom VSTis in it which I control from Cakewalk as an hardware instrument.

Now you have a good list of instruments. I think that any attempt to have full control over them with any other software would be a waste of time. If you were on a Mac maybe Logic... but my suggestion is to keep Sonar; create your panels, create your custom projects to be used as a librarian; decide which instrument goes to port1, port2, etc. and stick with it, and you'll have a stable setup for the rest of your life. When you need to "upgrade" just add another midi interface. ;)

anybody else have problems with sputnik? I made a track with it yesterday and it wont reload. :(
Don't F**K with Mr. Zero.

I had a couple of similar occurrences with other plugs, but actually it wasn't their fault - I used them again in other projects with no problem at all... don't know if you're using cubase, it seems to be a random tricks it likes to play occasionally :?

Post

I guess so. that sucks. oh well. I guess I'll try again.

Yeah, I haven't had a great deal of luck with this. My system is old but stable (P4HT, XPSP3, Reaper and EXT2.5). Sputnik doesn't want to find the patches I create and it will occasionally ( one in five maybe ) refuse to load altogether. It's not a showstoper, I just hate it when things that are stable on everybody elses system are flakey on mine. :(
