Don't sweat it. The fact that he and a lot of us at best got about 6 out of 9 correct shows it was more or less scatter-shot. I'm no statistician but my guess is that he would probably have done almost as well by just typing in random answers. He even questioned his own responses which clearly shows that the clear difference he speaks of isn't quite so clear. I'd love to say that my correct answers were significant but judging by the wrong ones they seem to have just been basic luck.

Also, there are some plugins that sound noticeably better than the others (to me), like the Creakbox3 filter, or the envelopes on VOPM (not analog, but much better FM sound than the others). Both of those are freeware, and even open source I think, so some inspiration might be drawn from these.

Before moving on to more advanced stuff a spot-on emulation is still a good idea to learn something IMO.
I agree that you should theoretically be able to surpass the good sound of the analog stuff by improving what is perceived as good about them. There's something in the filter of a 303 that makes it so appealing, so if this could be sucessfully isolated and amplified or modified something much more interesting might appear. After all, synthesizer sounds are pretty boring compared to some great acoustic instruments, so there is definitely room for improvement even for the best hardware synths.

that there is a difference between analog and digital sound and that people have a a hard time spotting it , but still are able to.

Sorry zerocrossing I dont believe that the test proves that this is a result of pure chance. Sure many people made mistakes but still there was in pattern in there and I think that if more people would participate that would have been obvious.

And 6/9 is far from bad number.

1) I have an Alesis Andromeda. Woot for me.
I can go to that machine and create an amazing, warm vibrant sound.
Re-creating that sound in any soft synth is considerably more complex and long-winded a process.

2) I have Zebra. I can go to that softsynth and create an amazing, warm vibrant sound. Recreating that sound on my Andromeda is considerably more complex and long-winded a process.

This proves nothing apart from that fact that sometimes you want a bike, sometimes you want a pair of rollerblades.

Painstakingly replicating one with the other for any reason other than nostalgia is pointless.
