Another thing I find annoying about the language used to describe analogues is that they are often subliminally praised - its not that the sound differnt, it is as far as they sound clearer, deeper etc

I would love to see people rate the sounds in order of how well they liked them - just to see whether people really prefer analogue sounds

Well, that would be, like... musical or something, couldn't have that could we.

Remember when Samurai Jack didn't pass the genie's purity-of-heart test after travelling the desert with the warrior woman... who turned out to be Aku?

That was heavy.

Liking a sound and finding out it's from a VST shouldn't be like that... it's just "analog or digital?", not a test of whether you're straight or gay or something. Though the passion and curious amounts of "methinks he doth protest too much..." that shows up in these threads might lead one to believe some take it all with somewhat suspicious seriousness...

yeah, huh. The sounds discussed in this thread, weren't, for me, worth listening to in their own right enough to care what made them, that's for sure. put them in a piece of music and see how well it all combines, and that's it, nuff said. they might sound fantastic, they might not*.

... recently I worked with a sax player, instead of using a vsti. He was playing along with a guitar sort of solo part in the first section I had him do.

He said, 'you show some great guitar chops there'. I said 'that isn't even any guitar, that's a vsti and me on a keyboard'; he was all 'don't TELL me that!'... as if he'd been conned.

* If the whole is just the sum of parts it means, not a lot...

This is also a very modern and clean sounding synth, discrete analog though.

What synth is this? Sounds very nice.

Jan- sounds kind of like the first few seconds of an orchestra tuning up, dropped down a couple of octaves and stretched very far in time- nice! That would be a great pad for jamming over live.

This one as well as the previous example is the technosaurus microcon II utilizing the 24db filter. There's also a 12db filter that sounds quite a lot dirtier. And an external input to treat every source you like and even process it with the envelope for things like gated pad sounds or drums. Outstanding value for the money.

419 incl. VAT at Schneider's, nice. I use the Vermona DAF a lot and am a fan of running all kinds of stuff including acoustic through analog filters.

Ya, that's part of the sloppyness. Next time I'll render it out through some gear on bypass and back in.

You can always try to add noise in frequency modulation. I use to do that in my Vaz modular software, to get that extra analouge feeling in the sound. The sound becomes more noisy, but also more unstable.

They regularly pop up used and more or less mint for around 250 EUR, too.

Well I use UAD and I use it because it takes load off the CPU. UA appear to be doing very nicely.

I'd forgotten that a friend of mine uses UAD... very nice stuff. Another friend went from Pulsar to native a few years ago.
