Angus_FX wrote:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Straw_manI'd like to compare them to what already out there as they are claiming it's the best VA Emulation, which is a big claim!
We've never posted any direct comparative claims regarding DCAM vs. other approaches. We do claim it sounds rather tasty, mind you, and I hope that for most people that claim is valid
DCAM: Synth Squad finally delivers the satisfaction of playing real analogue instruments in software! Advanced modelling technology carefully reconstructs the soul of dusty vintage circuits within your computer, for the unmatched vibe of hardware at a fraction of the cost.
That's what the site says, so I took that as saying 'The best VA Emulation', especially the 'unmatched vibe of hardware' bit.
BTW, I like the sounds in the demos, but would like to hear more and a timed demo would be the best way!

You'd have a very hard time making the following sound examples from the site with another soft synth:zerocrossing wrote: I know. The audio demos are for sure not doing anything for me. If there's something there that's beyond what I get from Sawer, Ultra Analog, Sylenth1 and Minimonsta I've yet to hear it.

-Cypher-2_OSC_FM
-Cypher-Fat_TB_Like
-Cypher-Minimal_Night
-Cypher-Reflex_Bass
-CDAM-Song_Me_So_Analog_Boom_Jinx
These to me really show off what's special about DCAM synth squad, but I also come up with lots of simple, but interesting patches in minutes of starting from scratch with any of them. That's the other thing I love about them. The speed of sound creation is unparalleled.

I tried to emulate the Lead sound from Pink Floyd's "Shine On You Crazy Diamond" in Strobe. Here is my first try, tips for optimizations are welcome:Ingonator wrote:I added the 9 Strobe patches to the KVR database:Ingonator wrote: UPDATE: 9 Strobe patches including all patches above:
http://rapidshare.com/files/276827746/I ... 7.9.09.zip
http://www.kvraudio.com/banks.php?s=lis ... order=date
Sooner or later i'll delete all single patches which i published above. Only the collection will stay.
UPDATE: all single files are deleted and substituted with the 9 patches collection.
1.) http://rapidshare.com/files/279437676/L ... 01__IW.zip
In this patch the aftertouch adds vibrato. The Modwheel increases the cutoff and adds a Saw Sub-Osc.
2.) http://rapidshare.com/files/279453480/L ... 01__IW.zip
This patch is like the one above but it uses both aftertouch and the modwheel for vibrato.
3.) http://rapidshare.com/files/279456586/L ... 02__IW.zip
Slightly modified version of 2.). The amount of the filter envelope cutoff mod is increased.
4.) http://rapidshare.com/files/279469369/L ... 03__IW.zip
A "smooth" version" of patch 2.)
5.) a collection of all 4 patches above:
UPDATE: replaced by a new 6 patches collection. Please look at my following post below.
Just for comparison.
For my feeling the original sound is closest somewhere between 2.) and 4.) so maybe i'll do further optimizations.
PS: Don't let Strobe fool you that it lacks oscillators. Just use the "Stack" function (with "Detune") and/or Sub-Osc's.

Thanks for these.
Something about the naming makes these unopenable in Logic (they are greyed out and not selectable). Removing the first category designation that you have used (eg 'LD') makes them openable.

Thanks. Maybe it's best to remove something from the end because with the "LD" at the beginning Strobe automatically detects the category.Mogular wrote:Thanks for these.

BTW i discovered that the original sound from 1975 is much "smoother" than in the newer versions so i guess the different patches cover that quite good.
UPDATE: I listened again to the 1994 version ("Pulse" Live concert) of the patch. IMO this version fits best (some changes from the older patches):
http://rapidshare.com/files/279521582/L ... 94__IW.zip
This patch fits also very good to the lead sound at the beginning of "Shine On You Crazy Diamond part 2" from 1975.
This one is a "smoother" version of that patch which fits better to the 1975 original version (Part 1): http://rapidshare.com/files/279521708/L ... ss__IW.zip
All 6 patches:
http://rapidshare.com/files/279522979/I ... atches.zip
The 6 patches sound quite different so i guess it's no problem in having different versions.

@ Ingo - thanks for sharing! You might want to repost these in the patch sharing thread over at our Synth Squad forum too, so they don't get lost in the noise...

Hello Angus, thanks for your answer. I just made a new thread:Angus_FX wrote:@ Ingo - thanks for sharing! You might want to repost these in the patch sharing thread over at our Synth Squad forum too, so they don't get lost in the noise...
http://www.kvraudio.com/forum/viewtopic ... 81#3759881
I'll post future updates at that thread.
I also added the patches to the KVR database:
http://www.kvraudio.com/banks.php?s=list&what=3172
I will also add them to the FXpansion user database as soon as possible.
UPDATE:
I added the files to the FXpansion Synth Squad forum. I included a link for the KVR thread.

One of my friends bought SynthSquad and I went to him to test this thing out.
I didn't spend an awful lot of time with it, but generally I was very disappointed. I associate analog with beautiful, smooth and at the same time, powerful sounds (for example: 1, 2, 3). SynthSquad sounds nothing like it. It's very raw and harsh, especially in the higher registers, and there is no "beauty" in its sound that I love so much in analog synths. It's possible to do okay basses and leads, but for pads SS is pretty much unusable because of that unpleasant high register harshness. Generally, all those things that I love about analog synth character are NOT PRESENT in SynthSquad.
Also, as with all the other modern synths, presets totally suck. There are maybe two or three normal bread'n'butter sounds for each synth, and the rest is weird distorted detuned noisy and absolutely unpleasant chaos, suitable only to torture enemies with it. And no classic analog sounds at all!
Now I'm very glad I didn't buy this thing based solely on hype around it. Everyone else, be warned: wait for a demo first, only then decide whether to buy it or not. SS might be not what you're expecting at all.

I think you might be thinking of virtual analog and not actual analog.

I don't understand what you mean.djanthonyw wrote:I think you might be thinking of virtual analog and not actual analog.
I have enough experience with actual analog. I owned Prophet 08 and currently own Matrix-1000, and tried a lot of various analog synths in different studios etc. The friend who bought Synth Squad owns original Prophet V and Moog Voyager, and they're night and day compared to SS. When I say analog, I mean analog.
