RMV installs in Vista 64 but won't load in Cubase 5 64

Hi,

After being very impressed with the RMV 5.0.4 Demo, which installed and loaded fine into my system, I decided to purchase RMV. After uninstalling the demo version and successfully installing the 5.0.5 beta, I discovered that RMV was no longer visible in my Cubase 5 VST instruments list.

I have an Acer Aspire X3810 with 4GB ram and Vista Home Premium 64 bit SP2. I am running Cubase 5 as 64 bit with no problems in loading and playing other 32 bit VST instruments. I am installing all of my VST instruments into directory C:/Program files/Steinberg/Cubase 5/VSTPlugins, which I assume is the proper directory for my Cubase 5 64 bit host.

I have noted that the following dll files are installed in the above plugin folder:

REX Shared Library.dll
RMV.dll
RMV 8-20.dll
RMV 32-0.dll

I have uninstalled and attempted to reinstall the demo but now, that no longer loads either. I have also tried installing the 5.0.4 version. Still no luck.

Have you checked 'Devices' -> 'Plugin Information' to see if they are in the list and active (check mark in the left column)?
You could also check the 'VST 2.X Patch' button to see if your shared folder is set to the right location.

Thanks for the prompt response.

No, none of the dlls are even listed under 'Devices' -> 'Plugin Information'. As well, the 'VST 2x Paths' button shows the path 'C:/Program Files/Common Files/Steinberg/VST2', but the 'REX Shared Library.dll' is not located there.

Doing a search on my hard drive, I note that in addition to the 'C:/Program files/Steinberg/Cubase 5/VSTPlugins' directory, a copy of 'REX Shared Library.dll' can also be found at 'C:/ Windows/SysWOW64'.

I tried to add 'C:/Program files/Steinberg/Cubase 5/VSTPlugins' to the 'VST 2x Paths', but got into trouble and had to do a system restore, as Cubase would no longer load because it could no longer find the shared library.

Should I manually move 'REX Shared Library.dll' to 'C:/Program Files/Common Files/Steinberg/VST2'?? I feel a little uneasy about doing manual changes to system files.

I don't think you can add 'C:/Program files/Steinberg/Cubase 5/VSTPlugins' to the VST2.X plugin path because it contains the Cubase VST3 plugins. Maybe this caused Cubase to go crazy. I think it's a good idea to keep your VST2's (like RMV) out of this folder anyway. I honestly have no idea how Cubase 5 reacts to this, I still have C4.

I put all my VST's in a folder I made : ..(drive letter)/Program Files/Vstplugins.

Thanks for the suggestion. Unfortunately, Cubase hangs trying to install the 'RMV 8-20.dll' file and I have to kill the Cubase process to recover.

Success at last! This time I installed the drum and loop libraries first before RMV. I could then install RMV into 'C:/Program Files/Common Files/Steinberg/VST2' with no problems. Does this sound correct? Are there installation dependencies on these libraries??

Should this be added to the installation chapter in the reference manual?

Strange, I'm pretty sure I installed the VST first and the library afterwards!

Maybe Peter from Linplug can shed a light on this, I have no experience with Vista / Cubase 5 64bit, I'm running Cubase 4 on XP.
