I replicated (tried) the phat bassline from Deadmau5-Hey Baby. Using the ES-M synth in Logic. Scroll to post #8 on the link. Unless someone wants to explain how to post the soundclip here.

It's pretty close, the process used to create it is pretty much the same for a lot of gritty electro basses. explained on the page

you have to sidechain your synth and put you notes on every 8th beat. aswell as filtering your synth

Hey everyone.

Firstly - Deadmau5 is awesome.

I've been writing music for over 10 years and think i'm finally getting to a point where my tunes are sounding ok.

Watch the videos on youtube for hints and tips on his production techniques.

Want to make an awesome bassline easily? Learn the art of side-chain inputs on compressors.

Confusing at first but once you do it once, you'll have the skill for life!

Layering bass can work for most parts but as the wavelength is so long, you have to eq the sounds seperatly otherwise the sounds will start cancelling each other out.

Check out my tunes and leave feedback and comments - I welcome constructive criticism.

www.myspace.com/roboteknic (http://www.myspace.com/roboteknic) is my site. Think Deadmau5, with a dark twist...

Oh, my. Not a good first post to make, necroposting in an old deadmau5 thread. Not good at all.

Layer 1 - Sub
Get your first synth create a sub sound.
Cut it Below 40hz and above 300hz
Compress and Eq
Why cut? A sine contains only one frequency. All this is going to achieve is the loss of the sine when you play notes outside of that frequency range, instantly changing the sound of the bass.

I agree, cutting the bass is something you only do if you need to. But with a fundemental tone like a sine wave there shouldn't be any reason unless you don't want people to hear all your notes! :)
