Hello everyone,

Hope you are all okay. For a while (and I mean a while!) I've been trying to recreate a couple of stabs, but am having problems making it sound so good.

I'm also now sure if I am chording this correctly? I'm playing them as a minor chord (I think, although my musical knowledge is limited)...

If anybody could help, Really would be greatful - does compression and a good reverb plugin come into this also?

Well, first things first, the key to this sound is the envelope...it MUST be tight as all hell.

Set your AMP ENV to:
A = 0
D = 30
S = 0
R = 5

Set your filter ENV to:
A = 0
D = 25
S = 0
R = 0

For the actual sound. Try:

OSC 1 = Square
OSC 2 = PWM (about halfway) +3 semitones
OSC 3 = Saw +12 semitones

Turn the cutoff down to about 15/20% and set the ENV AMNT to about 90%.

This really tight Square/Saw mix should give you a nice starting chord stab sound. You can then EQ it a touch to bring out the right biting frequencies, add some compression & maybe some chorus to thicken it up.

Run a sub bass (simple sine wave) on a another channel playing the root note to beef it up on the bottom end.

what synth are you using to make this sound?

Almost all synths can make make this sound, since it is rather simple.

Most likely I would have used Logic's ES2, as it's my goto synth for most of these sorts of things.

im on Cubase trying to do it with the sylenth1, but no 'PWM' osc =(
and the filter are a little diffrent.

the "PWM (about half way)" is probably just the Hpulse or Qpulse (i think that's what they're called in sylenth1) since soul_jukie doestn talk about actualy modulating the pulsewidth with an lfo (which you can't with sylenth1)

anyway; the sylenth is more than capable of creating stab sounds

On Sylenth1 you can make a Pulse wave using two sawtooth oscillators, inverting the 2nd one, and adjusting the phase. If you modulate the phase with an lfo you'll effectively be modulating the width of the pulse and get the classic PWM sound. You'll then still have two oscillators left to follow soul_junkie's tasty recipe. :)

so soul_junkies response isn't quite the benny royal sound but it is a good starting point. The Benny Royal synth stab in your example is a soundset from vengeance samples (VEC3). There is a lot of EQ work on the top end though.

Benny Royal's chords are of awesome quality in all his records. i would just dig thru ur samples :)
