One Synth Challenge 9 - The Halloween Comp! Gargoyle!

And there's now a second entry. I've gone back to 1978 for inspiration as well with more than a nod to (OK, a blatant rip off of) John Carpenter's Halloween, with Michael's Half Brother.

2 entries already. I'll try to submit one for this, now working on presets to use. It's been fun to create presets for Gargoyle!. Hopefully I'll manage to send a piece this month.

Zork, I really wish there was more input to OSC threads from Mac users. We have never set out to exclude maccies, but need their knowledge/experience of working with Mac when we plan these comps in order to formulate working equivalents so they can be included on an equal footing.
Unfortunately, on occasions I have requested info from Mac users ( which I required to achieve an inclusive scenario), I have had no response
I even delayed launching one of the comps to allow time for maccies to negotiate an inclusive setup.
So please stick around, and get your comments into the mix when it matters ... i.e. when we're throwing ideas around re future comps.... I'm sure I speak for the majority when I say again we dont want to exclude those not on a PC, but being PC'ers, we are not best equipped to come up with Mac/Linux friendly solutions.... other than to suggest you pick up an old PC, from a bin or a charity shop, and use it just for OSCs

I'm on a Mac and I don't remember any of that being the case. Where the question has been one of which synth would function as equivalent, I think I've come up with examples where appropriate. However, it did become clear, probably just after the Crystal competition that it was going to be difficult to find free alternatives for OS X simply because of the large number of candidates on Windows, particularly those made with SynthEdit. I've found ways around this, either by using Wacvst in the case of Felix, trying out Renoise (which has the benefit of running very nicely in a virtual machine and being practically identical in Mac and PC versions) and, most recently running the demo of Reaper in a VM, which was not so great but serviceable, and then finishing off the mix in Logic.

Gamma, I certainly recall you submitting comments re. the case for Mac use, it certainly wasn't ignored .. it just wasn't very well supported by other Mac users .... and there have been some around, they just didn't stick around .... or at least weren't around when their input was most needed
Its true that most folks are on PC, and that there is a far wider choice of free stuff for PC.
It's also true that, because decisions are made via concensus, and that often, decisions have to be rushed to keep things moving, that a minority of one is not gonna have a great deal of sway, but that does not mean your input was/is dismissed as irrelevant ... and thats why I would like to see more Mac users involved in the discussions/decisions .... or at least have the benefit of your experience of working around the disadvantage ... which you appear to do very successfully!
Sorry to hear you have deemed it not worthwhile to pursue the issue, though I can understand why .... but please feel free to keep it on the agenda ... if only to support, and gain support from guys like Zork in highlighting the disadvantages we are imposing on non PC users, and perhaps helping us towards having the knowledge of Mac issues for us to be more hospitable and inclusive.

Can we add in a little modulation; chorus, flanger, phaser?
Edit: Never mind. This synth probably doesn't need much in the way of effects. Heck, it _is_ an effect unto itself. This VSTI is brilliant.

Now, _that_ was certainly a challenge. I was getting some pretty darned good kickdrum sounds there for a moment, and then lost the parameters and could not 're-find' them. Maybe next month I can add some drums into the mix.
I've never heard anything like this synth. It's sort of like 'chiptoons meets the evil dead' or somesuch. The thing was freaking wailing there at times. Heck, it was doing all kinds of out of control stuff.
Edit: Never mind. This synth probably doesn't need much in the way of effects. Heck, it _is_ an effect unto itself. This VSTI is brilliant.

Obviously I have been showing an interest in this and I am afraid that I need to eat my words. I blogged that I felt it would be a tough ask for the participants this month as Gargoyle is intrinsically un-musical, but already thare have been some terrific entries. I would never have guessed that it was possible to get this quality of sound out of the little green beast!

A Krakli synth was again in the forefront - this time it was four instances of Cygnus, another effect type instrument. This was combined with Ugo's Motion - another weirdy and also fantastic.
