I'm going to be doing a lot of "hurry up and wait" soon, and I wondered about something small and portable (and hopefully cheap) to keep me occupied. What are the options for pocket music making tools? I don't have an iPhone or iPod or iAnything.

Nintendo DS with Korg DS10 mebbe?
Just make the music that you enjoy (failing that go for a walk, watch some porn, have a fight with a random bloke until something else happens).

The NDS, a decent homebrew card and some of the cuties from here. glitchDS, cellsDS and Repeater have their own homebase, nitrotracker has as well.

If you got a Sony PSP then http://www.rockstargames.com/beaterator/
is looking good. You need to ignore the cartoony stuff and realise that this thing is a solid little sampling drum machine and synth. It probably lacks the Korgness & cables of the DSi thing but worth checking out all the same.
PSP & NDS both have 'homebrew' apps available if you know how to get them running (hacked firmware) but stuff like trackers etc exist for both platforms and even a wireless Ableton Live 'triggerer' exists for the PSP.
You can even run the old 'Music' PS1 games on the PSP so if your into that kind of crap, it might be worth checking out.

You could look for an QY - 10,20,70,100 - I had a 70 it was pretty good at the time. The 10 and 20 are not as cool. The Roland PMA-5 has a high learning curve but it's not bad. IMO the QYs are easier to work with.Cordelia wrote:There are a lot more options than imagined! Thanks to all so far.

Thank you very much for all your help tomg.
I had a QY70, I enjoyed using it for a long time, passing the hours while on the road. I lent it to a friend a while ago... I should try to get it back. I remember the battery life was short. But it was a pretty amazing unit at the time.
Right now the DS-10 and the used Palm + Bhajis Loops are looking interesting. And Beaterator looks very cool although the PSP might be overkill.
The good thing about the Nintendo is it's small, relatively cheap, and I could also use it to brush up on my Spanish.

I've got a friend who will sell me his PSP (he just got the PSP Go) for $80 and he'll throw in a game called Iron Man. I've got it here now, I'm going to try it out tonight.
I looked at Beaterator (thanks Grain Bastard). Looking at the online videos, it seems pretty capable, actually reminds me of the QY70 in features and in function, with the bonus of audio and good graphics. You can load your own 16bit 44.1 .wavs, there is a .wav editor/looper that has a good feature set, a synth, a drum machine (8 tracks), 2 FX per audio track. You can overdub with the built in mic, you can import/export .mid files. There are 3,000 loops I'll never use. (I guess I should never say never, but I haven't used loops before.)
So that's around $40 plus $80 for the PSP (which seems to be in really good shape) and another $20 for a memory card. If the PSP is working, I think I can't pass this up.
I really appreciate all the help!

PSP Rythm is a free samplebased sequencer. PSP Seq is another freebie synthesis based. Both are homebrews so you need to upgrade your PSP with a similar system.
