The piano is built this way (with the white keys playing a major scale rather than a whole-tone or hexaphonic scale) to protect us from inadvertently being taken backward in time every time someone plays a glissando up the piano keys - particularly if the gliss is slow and with the pedal down.

Should anyone do this - even by accident - everything would suddenly go all wavy and we would find ourselves back at some significant moment in the past.
