I just saw some Star6 videos and it looks super fun.

I would say to take a look at JR Hexatone- there are some videos done by Jordan Rudess. BUT- until they come out with a new bug fix- don't buy it- it has a fatal bug that if you press and hold the center button (which is the randomizer)- it will crash the program everytime (when you are playing a sequence). But, once they fix it- it is an interesting beat maker.

We make an application called GrooveMaker that you might be interested in. It is a loop remixing tool, and a lot of fun! You can try out a free version here-

New on the block and, I think, by far the best is Music Studio by Xewton - it's like having Cubase or Logic in your palm.

Beat Maker is a very close second - better sounds but the sequencer takes a little getting used to.

Noise i.o. for instruments is great. The rest I don't bother with(you got to stop somewhere)!

Good luck.

Xewton 1+ :)

I didn't mention one of my personal favorites: Curtis Heavy

to me this is the ultimate expression of Burroughs/Gysin cut-ups- take a sample and explore it's inner universe of sounds

before I got my Ipod touch i thought I would be all over the keyboard synths and mpc pad samplers- but as it turned out I really didn't like the way these work on this form factor-

so far the apps that I really like to play and program are the ones with X/Y kaoss -like pads for control and synths/samplers with EDITABLE parameters and effects- there are many good sounding apps that turned out to be just toys for me because i could not make/use my OWN sounds-

so far Dopplerpad has really blown me away just from the samplers and the interface- some of the sounds are OK but since I cannot tweak them into my own sounds I don't really use them- I hope in the future they add some custom editable synths -

Shameless plug: I've just released an iPhone version of my classic HammerHead Rhythm Station (including the entire soundset of the original from 12 years ago):

http://itunes.apple.com/WebObjects/MZSt ... 47965&mt=8

There's also a free lite version you can try to see how the thing works/sounds if you've never used the original.

Good for a trip down memory lane :P

Cheers!

thank you bram. i actually like this since you can make your own kits, most other programs you can only select the kit and not mix and match.

on a side note, why is there no simple drum machine like this where u can load your own samples?? seems easy enough.

Problem is (at least I haven't been able to solve is) that the iPhone filesystem is completely sandboxed. There's no simple way to get usersamples in or out of an application, except via a clumsy web-server construction (or emailing things to yourself and crap like that).

If anyone can tell me a solution to that, I could even make a Tuareg for iPhone!

Some apps (including FiRe) can link to a ftp so you can use it as a virtual disk. You could even if you wanted setup a dedicated ftp for users to upload, download and share samples. It's also possible to create links to sites like Box.net for file storage and sharing (which also has its own app) - it annoys me though that there is no one central place to store user documents on the iphone

Thanks, I'll look into that... Although using an FTP server is hardly a low-threshold method that anyone will understand.

I agree, Apple should have a "My Documents" folder on the iPhone. They allow access to the photo folder via apps, so it shouldn't be too much of a security risk to have a folder for other types of docs too...

Plus there would be less chance of losing data if their buggy update programme borks halfway and you have to restore (which happens to me every time)
