I'm just reading the autobiography of a football hooligan from Bristol. A live gig by The Lurkers crops up in the book in the late 70's :!:

I was a bit too young for the punk movement, picking up on it later in the mid 80's. I've got a soft spot for The Exploited though who I once went to see live in Rayleigh (Essex). A note was stuck on the door "The Exploited are not turning up tonight so F@ck Off!" :hihi:

Charming - a stand in band called the Armless Teddies turned up and fun was had by all anyway. Highlight of the evening was a stage dive where the crowd parted and the mohican skydiver ate parquet flooring. That hurt

Cheers,
Mouxbar

Nothing to say, it's just that the forum has stopped sending me (again!!!) reply notices, so I have to post something to remind it I exist...

Well I use the OSC threads mainly to find some synths to play around with if the results are interesting. Yet I guess I can add to the suspense by throwing in my votes as I listened anyway to see how the synth performed.

10: Telemetry (Glynbo)
5: Someplace Safe (Mac of BIOnight)
3: Stairway to Taurus (Yeager)
2: Approaching to the Unknown (Opus Diaboli)
1: Sputonix (rsmus7)

I certainly appreciate it, thanks

Cheers for the votes blakar :)

Right, thats my weekend gigs out of the way ... now where were we? yeah ... 5 days to go!

(... and another week of school holidays to suffer! ... I hate the school hols! :hihi: )

I hope to get my votes in tonight, otherwise, it'll be tomorrow night. :)

Post

OK, just a little bump while I have a final listen before casting my votes :)

My votes, after long deliberation...

There were some excellent tunes in this one, although it did feel as though I'd stumbled onto some forgotten Jive-era Tangerine Dream album at times (but a lot less dull than the 'lost' Kyoto album). However, I've mainly gone for variety of sound more than anything.

So:

10 - Someplace Safe - Mac of Bionight.
5 - Stairway to Taurus - Yeager
3 - Splashdown - Tattiemannie. Had the singular advantage of not sounding like TD plus the calypso reel in the middle is something else.
2 - Korolev's Idea - Mouxbar. Nice spacious sound, lots of contrast.
1 - October 4, 1957 - K-Bee. Even this had shades of TD in (probably the whistle lead and the echo-y percussion noises. The bass was a bit too nasal, otherwise it would have gone higher.

OK, before my votes, here's my notes!

Alien Sunrise - kinda spooky, and tense. Thumping deep bass and ominous bell sounds .... and shifting background sounds. v. atmospheric.

Approaching the Unknown - Throbbing sound like a helicopter, alongside bells and almost subliminal sounds result in another tense journey ... a sense of anticipation ... nice percussion sounds. Track builds up nicely with a a strong brassy pad filling it out ... nice production.

Astroid minor - interesting 'juggy' percussion, a 6/8 composition with a gamelan type range of sounds ... very evocative .. reminds me of a west indian katakali dance performance.

Dawn of Infinity - Nice composition! individual parts a re fairly simple, but they interplay rather cleverly. A good range of sounds, kinda funky and dynamic.

Eighth Fret - An uneasy, atmospheric blend of melody and pad, strongly punctuated by some nice percussion demonstrating a good range from 'woody' to metallic

gtg lolz - kicks off with some convincing dialtone sounds. Quite abstract in composition, good percussion sounds, giving way to reedy/brassy sounds which take the track somewhere completely different

Ice organ - Another sinister kinda track. Rumblings of rock, water and metal form a backdrop to some melancholic organ playing ... an atmosphere of toil and desolation.

Impromptu - lovely intro... evoked pictures of time lapse film of a flower opening... then goes into chip tune!! this track keeps on moving though, clever, free flowing composition, culminating in 'glassy' pad and sweep sounds. This one will be up there ... got a beginning, a middle and an end, and just enough of a range of sounds to showcase Sputnik well.

Korolevs Idea - Industrial squelch and a 'whoomph' bass add rhythm
to a mellow, but heavy hearted feel ... nice sounds. Evoking a picture of someone about to break devastating news.

NII 88 - Good start, great pumping bass and hissy metallic percussion, and nice pad. Good production, but too short ... nice ending though

October 4 - starts with a solid 'hammered' bass. lovely sounds in there, very atmospheric and relaxing. birds soaring in the sunset. After a while, the bass seems at odds with the rest of the composition, very nice though!

Science - something sinister about this one. Love the plucked sound ... the chirp and the industrial grinder sounds are great as well ... i get the picture of a guy plodding towards a canary and attempting to saw its cage in half!!

Someplace Safe - does what it says on the tin! Cool sounds, lovely shifts in sound, melody and dynamics. whisked me away, and brought me gently home again ... and it didnt seem like 15 minutes! lovely production.

Sputnik 002 - Nice bass sound! nice sounds altogether! ... a little dominated by that glassy percussive 'piano', but a nice feel to it.... Evokes image of something mechanical being employed to produce something soft and delicate.

Sputonix - A real 'feelgood' vibe in this one from start to finish, nice sounds ... I wanted it to evolve a bit more though.

Stairway to Taurus - Excellent sounds, and good range - percussion included, cool production, great composition, lovely shifts in mood - great track!

Telemetry - Excellent percussion sounds - great bass, good range of other sounds, great production. The guts of a good composition there as well, but not long enough to go where it promised to.

Temple Gardens - Another gamelan? surely not! ... lovely dissonant metallic sounds, nice atmosphere, evocative of the far east and wide open spaces. ..just wish it was longer.

OK, it comes to that time where I have to decide that 13 tracks get nothing! ... thats the hard bit really, cos this collection is fkn excellent!
Thanks very, very much to all who submitted tracks ... I have enjoyed every single one of them, an I can safely say that every single one took me somewhere different, and never anywhere I didnt enjoy going back to!

But alas, here we go.

10 points - Stairway to Taurus (Yeager) ... for pure quality all round.
5 points - Impromptu in E minor (mrblitz000)... for imagination.
3 points - Someplace Safe (Mac of BIOnight) ... for the sweet journey.
2 points - Approaching the Unknown (Opus Diaboli)... for the helicopter ride.
1 point - Telemetry (Glynbo)... for those drums and for being Scottish(only joking :hihi: )

As if it matters in the grand scheme of things, 4 tracks were screaming at me for at least a point when I had to narrow it down, so I'll mention them.... Korolevs idea, Ice organ, Astroid Minor and Dawn of Infinity .... on another day, they may have been anywhere on my vote chart, and yet, it would be brave to say that on that 'other' day whether they would be a point above any of the others!
Thanks again.... now, any more votes?? still about 3 and ahalf days to go! :)

Righteeho! ... whats goin on here then? Stairway and Korolev have swapped places around Telemetry as the top 4 start to seperate out a bit whilst leaving the rest behind! Is Someplace Safe safe enough? ... you decide!
Its close for 5th place between Ice Organ and Approaching the Unknown ... who knows whats gonna happen there? ... theres a prize at stake in that region, and they look clear to battle it out between them!
Otherwise, the chart looks relatively unchanged apart from our highest climber ... Impromptu!

Still a long way to go though, so get those votes in!

Post

Wow, thanks aeverybody again :)

If I was smart, I wouldn't say this because it'll reduce my advantage, but I'm an idiot, so... Tattiemannie, please go to page three: towards the top you will find Abstractcats' edited votes that I think you forgot to include in the count

Post

Aha! ... thanks for that Mac, ...didn't notice that at all! ... I suppose I was waiting for the votes in a follow up post ... cool! I'll update!
